Fifteen studio albums, and one of them is only half theirs. That split is the reason a gift for ELO fans works better as a map than as a poster of album sleeves, because the moment you draw Xanadu as two stations rather than one, the whole shape of the catalogue changes.
I hand-researched this one from the sleeve credits up, album by album, and the thing that stopped me was Richard Tandy. Forty-six years of keyboards, one album missed near the end, and then a single piano solo on the last record.
The short version. My ELO discography map plots 15 studio albums from The Electric Light Orchestra (1971) to From Out of Nowhere (2019), drawn as 16 stations because the 1980 Xanadu soundtrack is split in two. My research sheet carries 56 named contributors. Jeff Lynne is credited on every station except one. Richard Tandy reaches 14. Why a Gift for ELO Fans Needs Sixteen Stations for Fifteen Albums
Jeff Lynne's line runs the length of the map and only breaks once. He is credited on 15 of the 16 stations, and the single one he misses is Olivia Newton-John's half of Xanadu, a record with his name on the cover.
That is the sort of detail that makes the split worth drawing. Plot Xanadu as one station, and you smear two entirely separate sessions, two bands and two cities into a single dot on the line.
For a fan who has argued about whether Xanadu counts, the map settles it visually. It counts, and it is honest about which half is which.

Tandy joined at ELO 2 in 1973, not at the debut, and from there his line is almost unbroken. He is credited on 14 stations, and on Out of the Blue alone, his credit lists a Yamaha C7B piano, a Polymoog, a Mellotron M400, an ARP Odyssey and a Gibson SG.
Then, in 2015, he was not on Alone in the Universe at all. His line stops, and there is a gap you can see from across the room.
It picks up again in 2019 on From Out of Nowhere, where the entire credit is a piano solo on "One More Time". Tandy died in May 2024, which makes that last short entry the quietest and most affecting thing on the print.
Four Players Walk Off the Map at the Same Station
The string section is what most people mean when they say ELO, and it disappears all at once. Mik Kaminski on violin, Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gale on cello all have their final classic-era credit on Out of the Blue in 1977, and Mike Edwards had already gone after Eldorado.
The next station is Discovery in 1979, and there is not a single in-band string player on it. Louis Clark stays on for the orchestral and choral arrangements, but the players who sat in the band are gone.
Kaminski does come back, once. He has one credit on Secret Messages in 1983, a violin part on "Rock 'n' Roll Is King", six years after his previous appearance. Buy the A1 for somebody who owns Out of the Blue on vinyl and that return is the first thing they will point at.
Roy Wood's Line Is the Shortest Story on the Print
Roy Wood co-founded the band, and on the 1971 debut his credit is enormous: vocals, cello, bass, double bass, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, recorder, krumhorn, and drums on "The Battle of Marston Moor". It is one of the longest credits I have ever transcribed.
By ELO 2 he is down to bass and cello on two tracks, and then his line ends. He left to form Wizzard, and Bill Hunt, who played French horn and piccolo trumpet on the debut, went with him.
Two stations in, and the band that made Mr. Blue Sky had already lost the man who started it.
Xanadu Is the Busiest Station and Gene Kelly Is Standing On It
Fifteen names touch my ELO map exactly once, and all fifteen of them are standing at Xanadu. Gene Kelly takes co-lead vocals on "Whenever You're Away from Me". Cliff Richard shares the lead on "Suddenly". Four members of The Tubes play "Dancin'" between them.
Lou Halmy is credited for whistling. These are branch lines in the truest sense, spurs that come off the network, serve one station and stop.

Two Beatles Play on Zoom, and Almost Nobody Knows
Zoom, in 2001, is often written off as the album nobody bought. On my map, it is one of the richest stations on the network.
George Harrison plays slide guitar on two tracks. Ringo Starr drums on two more. Rosie Vela is credited for backing vocals, spoken parts and tap dancing, which I had to read twice before I typed it into the sheet.
Jeff Lynne, meanwhile, is credited on Zoom with vocals, backing vocals, electric guitars, bass, keyboards, drums and cello on "Melting in the Sun". Anyone giving this print to a fan who dismissed Zoom at the time is handing them an argument they will enjoy losing.
The Last Two Stations Carry Three Names Each
Alone in the Universe (2015) has three credited contributors: Jeff Lynne, engineer Steve Jay, and Laura Lynne on backing vocals. From Out of Nowhere (2019) has three as well, with Richard Tandy's piano solo in place of the backing vocals.
Set that against the sixteen names crowding Xanadu and the map does something a tracklist never can. It shows a band contracting to one man and a couple of trusted hands, in a shape you read in a second.

Both sizes are landscape. The A2 at 594 x 420 mm (24 x 18 in in US sizing) reads the main lines clearly from a few feet away and starts at £42.00.
The A1 at 841 x 594 mm (36 x 24 in) is the one I would send to somebody who owns the box set. At that size, the fifteen one-off names at Xanadu separate out properly, and you can follow Tandy's gap without hunting for it.
