Two lines run the full length of the map, and the one that matters most is a relay. The guitar chair passes from Brian Jones to Mick Taylor to Ronnie Wood, and each handover is visible as the point where one line ends and another begins.

They own the records already. What they do not have on the wall is the shape of the band: who stayed, who left, and who came back once for a single track more than thirty years later.

Sixty-two years across 28 stations produce a print with an enormous amount to take in. It rewards every closer look.

Contributing musicians on the map

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts are the three credited on every album. Watts recorded his last drum sessions in 2021, and those takes still surface on Hackney Diamonds and again on Foreign Tongues, so his line runs the entire length of the map.

The guitar succession is the spine. Brian Jones runs from the debut to Let It Bleed, Mick Taylor takes over from Let It Bleed to It's Only Rock 'n Roll with a late reappearance on Tattoo You, and Ronnie Wood arrives at Black and Blue in 1976 and never leaves.

Bill Wyman's line does something unexpected. It stops at Steel Wheels in 1989, ahead of his departure, and then returns once, 34 years later, for "Live by the Sword" on Hackney Diamonds.

Ian Stewart, the sixth Stone, has one of the longest lines. His piano runs from the debut through to Dirty Work in 1986, and Nicky Hopkins covers most of the stretch from Their Satanic Majesties Request in 1967 to Tattoo You in 1981.

The debut already has guests worth finding. Gene Pitney on piano, Phil Spector on maracas, and Graham Nash and Allan Clarke of the Hollies on backing vocals, all four of them on "Little by Little".

Let It Bleed and Exile on Main St. each feature 21 credited musicians, including Merry Clayton's co-lead vocal on "Gimme Shelter", the London Bach Choir, Al Kooper and Ry Cooder. The busiest stations on the map are Dirty Work and Bridges to Babylon, each with 24.

Later oddities are easy to miss. David Bowie sings backing vocals on Black and Blue, Tattoo You brings in Sonny Rollins on saxophone, and Pete Townshend on backing vocals, and Jimmy Page turns up on "One Hit (To the Body)" on Dirty Work.

The newest station is the fullest since 1997. Foreign Tongues features 17 credited musicians, including Paul McCartney on bass, Steve Winwood, Benmont Tench on organ, Ben Waters on piano, Chad Smith on concert bass drum, and Bruno Mars on cowbell.
