No band rewards this treatment more. Fagen and Becker built each record around whoever suited the track rather than a fixed line-up, so the credits are the story, and no sleeve ever shows them all at once.

Not an algorithm - every connection on this map was made by hand, by an obsessive fan. It is the kind of present that gets framed and kept rather than opened once and shelved.

Contributing musicians on the map

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are the only two lines that run through all nine albums. Everything else moves.

The early band thins out fast. Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and Jim Hodder both stopped after Pretzel Logic in 1974, while Denny Dias ran six albums from the debut through to Aja.

Victor Feldman has the longest session line on the map, seven albums from Can't Buy a Thrill in 1972 to Gaucho in 1980. Chuck Rainey's bass and Larry Carlton's guitar anchor the mid-1970s peak alongside him.

Gaucho is the densest station on the whole map with 41 credited musicians, just ahead of Aja on 37. The debut, by contrast, needed 13.

The one-offs are worth the magnifying glass. Mark Knopfler plays lead guitar on a single Gaucho track and appears nowhere else, and Wayne Shorter's tenor saxophone is a one-album line on Aja.

Hugh McCracken does something almost no one else manages: his line survives the twenty-year silence between Gaucho in 1980 and Two Against Nature in 2000, running from Katy Lied in 1975 all the way to Everything Must Go in 2003.
