Why is this Pink Floyd Music Art Print a perfect gift for Pink Floyd fans?

Pink Floyd fans have argued for decades about who was really in the band and when. This Pink Floyd art print runs the albums in order from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn to The Endless River, each credited musician on their own line, so the departures and returns finally settle the matter. Nick Mason fans will be quietly pleased with the answer.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.

The stations run chronologically from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn in 1967 to The Endless River in 2014. Guest musicians branch off as short spurs.

Four men, one band, and almost nothing in common about who was present for what. Only one line runs the entire length of this map, and it is not the one most people would guess.

Laid out as lines, the departures and returns stop being trivia and become the shape of the thing. It rewards every closer look.

Contributing musicians on the discography tube map

Nick Mason is the only musician on all 15 albums. Not Gilmour, who is absent from the debut, and not Waters, whose line stops after The Final Cut in 1983.

Richard Wright's line has exactly one gap in it. He is on every album except The Final Cut, then returns for the last three. Syd Barrett appears only on the first two.

Dick Parry's saxophone is one of the map's best shapes: The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, then nothing for nineteen years until The Division Bell.

Clare Torry, whose wordless vocals made The Great Gig in the Sky, has two stations rather than the one most fans assume. She returns for The Wall.

The Wall is where the map gets crowded, pulling in Bruce Johnston and Toni Tennille, Jeff Porcaro, Roger Waters' son Harry, and the Children of Islington Green School.

Then there are the two credits nobody believes until they see them. Seamus the Dog is a credited contributor on Meddle, and Stephen Hawking appears on two albums, The Division Bell and The Endless River.

Who is the only constant member?
Nick Mason, credited on all 15 albums from the 1967 debut to The Endless River.

Which album is Richard Wright missing from?
The Final Cut in 1983, the only gap in his line. He returns for the last three albums.

Is a dog really credited on a Pink Floyd album?
Yes. Seamus the Dog is a credited contributor on Meddle, and appears on the map as a branch line like any other one-off.
