A gift for David Bowie fans who know the reinventions but not who actually carried them, because this runs every credited musician as their own line across 26 studio albums. They own the records already, and this is the thread running underneath all of them.

Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Available in A2 or A1, with US sizing at 24x18in and 36x24in, unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.

The stations run chronologically from the 1967 debut, through the Ziggy Stardust era and the Berlin trilogy, to Blackstar in 2016.

Why this David Bowie discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep

Bowie changed shape so often that most fans hold him as a series of separate eras rather than one career. Lines do what a shelf of records cannot: they show you who stayed when everything else changed.

This particular design is held in the permanent collection at the V&A David Bowie Centre, V&A East Storehouse, London. The full story on your wall, and the same design an institution chose to keep.

Contributing musicians on the map

Carlos Alomar and Mike Garson are the two longest lines after Bowie himself, eleven albums each. Alomar's guitar starts at Young Americans in 1975, and Garson's piano goes back further, to Aladdin Sane in 1973.

Tony Visconti spans nine albums as producer and player, including the Berlin trilogy and the late return to form. Dennis Davis drums across the six-album Berlin and post-Berlin run, with George Murray on bass alongside him for five.

Mick Ronson's line does something no other does. It runs from The Man Who Sold the World through Pin Ups, stops for two decades, then reappears once on Black Tie White Noise in 1993.

Young Americans in 1975 is where the map gets crowded, 19 credited musicians on one record, and two of the most surprising lines on the whole print are single stations there: John Lennon and Luther Vandross.

Black Tie White Noise is the densest station of all, 24 credited musicians. Nile Rodgers has a station on Let's Dance in 1983 and another there in 1993, and Robert Fripp's two are Heroes and Scary Monsters.

The short lines repay the closest look. Ronnie Wood plays on Pin Ups and nothing else, Dana Gillespie appears once on Ziggy Stardust, Iggy Pop turns up on Low and again on Tonight, and Pete Townshend bridges 23 years with only two stations, Scary Monsters in 1980 and Reality in 2003.

How I make each print

Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or framed, ready to hang in a hallway, living room or studio.

Size UK USA / CAN / AUS equivalent Orientation
A2 594 x 420 mm (23 x 16 in) 24 x 18 in Landscape

FAQ

Is this map really held by the V&A?
Yes, this design is held in the permanent collection at the V&A David Bowie Centre, V&A East Storehouse, London.

How are the maps drawn?
In CAD software, plotted line by line. Every credited musician is a transit line, every album a station, and one-off contributors branch off the main routes.

How many albums are on the map?
26 studio albums, running from the 1967 debut to Blackstar in 2016.

Who are the longest-serving contributing musicians?
Carlos Alomar and Mike Garson, eleven albums each, then Tony Visconti across nine as producer and player.

Is John Lennon really on the map?
Yes, as a single station on Young Americans in 1975, and nowhere else. Luther Vandross appears on that same record.

Why is Toy not included?
Toy was released in 2021, after the map was drawn, so it does not currently appear.

What are the framing options?
Unframed, or supplied framed and ready to hang.

Shipping excellent. Artwork, a print style, I expect something different.

Mike - here - not AI - sorry to hear. I try to show every detail of the music and movie maps on the site without putting my designs in danger of being copied - I try to be explicit about what they show. Sorry to hear the less-than-enthusiastic response. M

My Bowie map looks great, and - as a Bowie obsessive since 1972 - I’ve loved being able to see the paths of all the other musicians who wove in and out of Bowie’s career over all his decades of stardom.
