A gift for Kate Bush fans who know every song without ever knowing who made half the sounds on them, because this runs all ten albums with each credited musician as their own line. They already own the records, and the credit list turns out to be as strange as the music.

Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Produced in A1 only, with US sizing at 36 x 24 in, unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.

The stations run chronologically from The Kick Inside (1978) to 50 Words for Snow (2011). One-off contributors branch off as short spurs.

Why this Kate Bush discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep

Most discographies are of a band and some session players. This one is a family, a rotating cast of folk and classical specialists, and a run of guest stars nobody would put in the same room.

Drawn as lines, it becomes obvious how unusual that is, and how consistent she was about it across three decades.

Contributing musicians on the map

Her brother Paddy Bush has the longest line after Kate herself, appearing on nine of the ten albums. The instruments he is credited with are the best argument for reading the map closely: balalaika, sitar, koto, musical saw, bullroarer, didgeridoo, valiha, singing bowls, fujara, mandocello, pan flute, and on one track, a whip, described in the credits as a swished fishing rod.

Three more of the family have stations. Her other brother, John Carder Bush, narrates on Hounds of Love, her father, Robert Bush, speaks on The Sensual World, and her son, Albert McIntosh, appears on the last three albums, taking a lead vocal on 50 Words for Snow.

Del Palmer and Stuart Elliott are the two long-working lines, Palmer across eight albums and Elliott across the first eight.

The Red Shoes in 1993 is where the map turns into a party. Prince plays keyboards, guitar, bass and vocals on one track, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton both play guitar, Nigel Kennedy plays violin and viola, Gary Brooker plays Hammond organ, and Lenny Henry sings.

David Gilmour has a single station on The Sensual World, and Trio Bulgarka's vocals run across two albums. The final record brings in Elton John and Stephen Fry, the latter credited as Professor Joseph Yupik.

How I make each print

Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or framed, ready to hang in a hallway, living room or studio.
