The Guardian Interview with Mike Bell - Summer 2026

A Shift: De-diagnosis into Map-making

The Guardian Interview 26th June 2026

A journalist from the Guardian spent some time with me recently, and the piece is now out.

It goes somewhere more personal than I usually do here. Being diagnosed with Parkinson's at 53, living with it for eight years, and then being "de-diagnosed" at 61. What it does to you to lose an illness you'd built a whole community and sense of purpose around.

These data maps run all the way through it. They started as something to keep me going, and somewhere along the way they turned into a new career. At 62, that still feels slightly mad to say out loud.

Thank you to everyone who has bought a map, sent me a correction, or just told me one made them smile. You're all part of this.

Here as told to The Guardian.
