The Smiths Albums: Discover Their Legacy

Mike Bell

The Smiths' albums are a testament to their unique blend of guitars, poetic lyrics, and Morrissey’s distinctive vocals. Guitarist Johnny Marr's innovative guitar work and bassist Andy Rourke's exceptional bass playing style contributed significantly to the band's sound. Both musicians are captured across my Smiths split map and my Morrissey and Johnny Marr albums maps.

Their debut album, “The Smiths,” hit the shelves in 1984 under Rough Trade Records and quickly climbed to number two on the UK Albums Chart. This post-punk influenced record laid the foundation for their future success, introducing the world to their raw, emotive sound.

Their sophomore effort, “Meat Is Murder,” arrived in 1985, also via Rough Trade. This second album saw the band refining their sound and broadening their musical horizons. Drummer Mike Joyce's essential drumming provided a solid foundation that enhanced the band's unique musical identity. It became their only album to reach Number One in the UK, marking a significant milestone in their career.

In 1986, The Smiths released their third album, “The Queen Is Dead,” which solidified their popularity. This album expanded their cult following in the US, breaking into the Top 100, and featured the controversial non-LP single “Panic.” Despite some criticism, the album is often hailed as one of their best works.

Their fourth and final studio album, “Strangeways, Here We Come,” was released in 1987. This album saw the band experimenting with new sounds, including haunting piano codas and synthetic strings. Although it hinted at a new direction for the band, it ultimately became their swan song, as they disbanded shortly after its release.

The Smiths' Albums and Chart Success

Live Albums and Compilations

The Smiths’ live performances were legendary, and their live albums capture their concerts' raw energy and emotion. “Rank,” recorded during the Queen Is Dead tour, was released in 1988 and debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart. This live album showcases the band at the height of their powers, delivering electrifying performances of their classic songs.

In addition to live albums, The Smiths released several compilations that have become essential parts of their discography. “Hatful of Hollow,” released in 1984, is a compilation of non-album material that reached Number 7 on the UK Albums Chart. It includes some of their most beloved tracks, offering a deeper dive into their early work. The Smiths began to reshape the musical landscape with this compilation, which included radio sessions and significant B-sides. The B-sides, such as the iconic 'How Soon Is Now?', are integral to understanding the band's artistic evolution and influence.

The band’s singles compilations, such as “Singles” (1995) and “The Sound of The Smiths” (2008), feature many of their most popular songs, including “This Charming Man,” “How Soon Is Now?,” and “Bigmouth Strikes Again.” These compilations serve as a testament to the enduring appeal of their music.

Impact on the Music Scene

The Smiths left an indelible mark on the music scene of the 1980s and beyond. As an English rock band from Manchester, their music, characterised by Johnny Marr’s guitar sound and Morrissey’s poetic lyrics, became a defining feature of the indie rock and Britpop genres.

They captured the essence of the early 1980s, creating timeless music that resonates with new generations of listeners. Their ability to craft intricate pop melodies within their songs showcased a blend of post-punk energy and melodic pop sensibilities. The Smiths also influenced various groups in the indie-rock scene, inspiring bands across multiple decades.

Their influence can be heard in the work of numerous artists across various decades. Bands like Oasis, Blur, and Radiohead have all cited The Smiths as a significant influence. Even contemporary acts like My Chemical Romance and The 1975 acknowledge the impact of The Smiths on their music. The band’s legacy also extends to other artists like The Stone Roses, Deftones, and St Vincent, who have all drawn inspiration from their innovative sound.

The Smiths’ Enduring Popularity

Despite disbanding in 1987, The Smiths’ popularity has only grown. Their music remains popular and influential, earning them numerous awards and accolades. They achieved significant success on the British charts, with many of their singles and albums reaching notable positions.

In 2006, they were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame, a testament to their lasting impact on the music industry and their performance on the charts.

The Smiths’ songs have been featured in various films and television shows, such as the movie “High Fidelity” and the TV show “The O.C.” Their music has also been covered by numerous artists, including The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Stone Roses, and The Libertines, further cementing their legacy.

In 2002, the NME named The Smiths “the artist to have had the most influence on the NME.” In 2003, all four of their studio albums appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” The Smiths' enduring popularity is a testament to their innovative and influential music, which continues to inspire and delight fans worldwide. More controversy surrounded Morrissey and the band's public image, adding to their notoriety and media presence.

About Me: From Event Designer to Data Visualisation Specialist

Hi, I'm Mike Bell, a UK-based show and event designer. I started creating these tube-style maps during the lockdown when my work in event design was temporarily put on hold. The first map combined my experience in live music with a growing interest in data visualisation. Since then, I've continued to create maps alongside my work in event design, and the two disciplines now form the core of my creative output.
