A gift for John Lennon fans who are tired of being handed the round glasses and one lyric, because this maps twelve albums including the six he made with Yoko Ono. They own the records already. Half of these stations get left out of the story entirely.

Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Available in A2 or A1, with US sizing at 24x18in and 36x24in, unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.

I drew this one so that each credited musician calls at every album they played on, in the style of a classic tube map. The stations run chronologically from Two Virgins in 1968 to Milk and Honey in 1984, taking in the five solo albums, the six made with Yoko Ono and the posthumous record.

Why this John Lennon discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep

Two Beatles appear on this map as sidemen. Ringo Starr drums on two stations and George Harrison plays on three, including sitar on a Yoko Ono record.

Not an algorithm - every connection on this map was made by hand, by an obsessive fan. I follow the sleeve credits exactly, which is why one station carries a set of names that look like typing errors and are not.

Contributing musicians on the map

John Lennon runs the full width. Yoko Ono is on eight of the twelve, and on the 1970 Plastic Ono Band album her credit reads simply as wind.

Klaus Voormann is the longest sideman line, playing bass across six albums from 1970 onwards. Jim Keltner is on five, and Nicky Hopkins on four.

Some Time in New York City is the strangest station on the print. The sleeve renames the guests, so Eric Clapton is Derek Claptoe, Keith Moon is Kief Spoon, Klaus Voormann is Raus Doorman and Nicky Hopkins is Sticky Topkins, with the audience credited as a cast of thousands.

Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band album brings four free jazz musicians onto the map for a single track, with Ornette Coleman on trumpet, Charlie Haden and David Izenzon on double bass and Ed Blackwell on drums.

Rock 'n' Roll pulls in the Los Angeles session world under Phil Spector, including Hal Blaine, Leon Russell, Steve Cropper, Jesse Ed Davis and José Feliciano. Walls and Bridges has Elton John on two tracks and Julian Lennon, aged eleven, drumming on Ya Ya.

Double Fantasy and Milk and Honey share a New York band including Earl Slick, Tony Levin, Hugh McCracken and Andy Newmark, with a steel drum on Beautiful Boy and a hammer dulcimer on Watching the Wheels. Carlos Alomar sings backing vocals on Milk and Honey.

How I make each print

Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or framed, ready to hang in a hallway, living room or studio.

Size UK USA / CAN / AUS equivalent Orientation
A2 594 x 420 mm (23 x 16 in) 24 x 18 in Landscape
A1 841 x 594 mm (33 x 23 in) 36 x 24 in Landscape

FAQ

Are the Yoko Ono albums included?
Yes, all six, from Two Virgins in 1968 through to Double Fantasy.

Do any Beatles appear?
Ringo Starr and George Harrison both do, as credited musicians on Lennon's records rather than as a reunion.

Why do some names look misspelled?
Because they are, deliberately. Some Time in New York City credits its guests under joke names, and I have kept them as printed.

Is Ornette Coleman really on the map?
Yes, playing trumpet on a single track of Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band album with Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell.

Who is the most frequent sideman?
Klaus Voormann on bass, across six of the twelve albums.

What are the framing options?
Unframed, or supplied framed and ready to hang.

George Harrison plays on three of these albums, so the George Harrison Discography Map Art Print is a direct companion piece, and Keith Moon's appearance under a false name connects it to the Who Discography Map Art Print.
