Why this Taylor Swift discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep
This is a discography gift for Taylor Swift fans who can hear the move from Nashville session country to Swedish pop production, and would like to see exactly who made it happen. It is the first of my three Taylor Swift maps, covering six studio albums from the 2006 debut to reputation in 2017.
The stations run in release order: Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989 and reputation. The credited musicians who played on them are the lines, and anyone who appears on a single record branches off as a short spur.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and the shape of the network comes straight out of the album credits.
Across these six records you can watch one studio world hand over to another. The country players thin out album by album, Max Martin and Shellback arrive at Red, and by reputation the only line left from the 2006 session crew is Taylor herself.
Red is where the two worlds overlap, and it shows on the print. It is the busiest station on this map by a distance, with Nashville regulars, a full string section and the new production team all converging on one album.
Contributing musicians on the map
Taylor Swift is the only line that runs through all six stations. Her own credits change as it goes, from lead vocals and acoustic guitar on the debut to producer on Fearless and on several reputation tracks.
Nathan Chapman is the next longest line. He produces and plays on the first five albums, from the debut through to 1989, and then stops one station short of the end.
The debut is a Nashville session record. Bruce Bouton on dobro, Jeffrey Hyde on banjo, Wanda Vick on fiddle and Lex Price on mandolin all appear here and never again, part of eleven one-off branch lines on the first station alone.
Some of that crew stays on for a while. Nick Buda on drums and Eric Darken on percussion play on the first four albums, Rob Hajacos and Tim Marks on the first three, and Shannon Forrest drums on the debut and Speak Now while skipping Fearless in between.
Fearless credits eight separate people with finger snapping, Colbie Caillat among them. It is also where members of her touring band start to appear: Caitlin Evanson, Amos Heller and Grant Mickelson join here, with Mike Meadows, Paul Sidoti and Liz Huett following on Speak Now.
Red brings the biggest change of cast. Max Martin, Shellback, Jacknife Lee, Butch Walker, Dan Wilson and Jeff Bhasker all arrive, Bill Rieflin plays drums, and Gary Lightbody and Ed Sheeran get branch lines as featured artists.
1989 is built around Max Martin and Shellback, brings in Jack Antonoff for the first time and gives Imogen Heap a spur of her own. On reputation, Antonoff, Martin and Shellback carry on, Ed Sheeran returns, Future joins, and James Reynolds is credited with the baby voice intro on Gorgeous.
