The Beatles Discography and Musicians Mapped
Thirteen studio albums, from Please Please Me (1963) to Let It Be (1970), and behind them a remarkable network of collaborators, producers and instrumentalists. All of it is on my music map art print, which comes in white and black editions.
Through the research behind it, I have plotted every credited musician across the core catalogue as a single print.
What emerges is a story of expansion: from four men in Studio Two at Abbey Road to a collective of session players, orchestras and engineers who shaped the sound of modern music.
The Core Four: Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr
- John Lennon, vocals, rhythm and lead guitars, piano, Moog, sound effects. From the jagged guitar on Revolution to the drift of Across the Universe, his fingerprints are on every era.
- Paul McCartney, bass, piano, guitar, percussion, Moog. The melodic engine behind Yesterday, Hey Jude and The Long and Winding Road, with his instrument list widening on every record.
- George Harrison, lead guitars, sitar, Moog, harmonium, and lead vocals on Something, Here Comes the Sun and While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
- Ringo Starr, drums, percussion and occasional vocals on With a Little Help from My Friends and Octopus's Garden. The un-showy precision holding every experiment together.
George Martin
George Martin was the architect of the sound. From his celesta on Baby It's You to the tape loops of Tomorrow Never Knows, his classical training and technical imagination turned raw ideas into finished records. The string and brass arrangements on Eleanor Rigby remain among the most enduring in pop.
Session Musicians and Hidden Contributors

Every Album in Order
1. Please Please Me (1963)
Recorded in a single day, and it sounds like it, in the best sense. George Martin's simple piano parts and the Lennon-McCartney harmonies define early Beatlemania.
2. With The Beatles (1963)
Tighter, darker, more confident. Martin begins experimenting with stereo and richer textures.
3. A Hard Day's Night (1964)
The first album of all Lennon-McCartney originals. Lennon's Rickenbacker jangle and Martin's doubled piano on the title track become signature sounds.
4. Beatles for Sale (1964)
A weary but mature record, with folk influences that point straight at Rubber Soul.
5. Help! (1965)
Orchestration expands. Flutes and strings hint at the studio revolution coming.
6. Rubber Soul (1965)
The sitar arrives on Harrison's Norwegian Wood, alongside harmonium and fuzz bass.
7. Revolver (1966)
Studio innovation peaks: backwards guitars, tape loops, brass, and tabla on Love You To. The string octet on Eleanor Rigby shows McCartney and Martin in symphonic sync.
8. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)
A kaleidoscope of collaborators, from orchestras to the avant-garde. Sounds Inc. and harpist Sheila Bromberg help turn pop into something else.
9. Magical Mystery Tour (1967)
The experiments spill into surrealism. The brass on I Am the Walrus is controlled chaos.
10. The Beatles (The White Album) (1968)
A double album of extremes, stripped-back blues next to orchestral opulence. Eric Clapton and Yoko Ono both appear, with George Martin's strings on Martha My Dear.
11. Yellow Submarine (1969)
Half soundtrack, half studio experiment, and the place where Martin's own orchestral compositions sit alongside the band's.
12. Abbey Road (1969)
The technical peak. Billy Preston's Hammond organ and Harrison's Moog shape the medley's textures.
13. Let It Be (1970)
A raw farewell. McCartney's piano anthems meet Preston's gospel touch, and Linda McCartney's harmonies soften the title track.
What the Map Makes Obvious
Plotting the credits makes one thing plain: the Beatles were never four people working alone. The brilliance grew through collaboration, between four songwriters, one producer with an unusual imagination, and a revolving cast of specialists. Every violinist, trumpeter, tabla player and engineer left a fingerprint. Drawn as a network, that is the shape of the thing, and the earliest stations look startlingly bare next to the later ones.
