The Foo Fighters albums in order run from the self-titled debut in 1995 to Your Favorite Toy in 2026, twelve studio albums in 31 years. My discography map plots those twelve plus Hail Satin as the Dee Gees, opening with the three Nirvana records, 16 stations and 82 credited musicians in all.
Every station is a release. Every line is a credited musician. I researched the credits release by release from my own sheet rather than working from the hits, which is why the map can tell you which track a one-off guest played on.

The map carries two things beyond that run of twelve, so it plots releases rather than studio albums alone. Hail Satin (July 2021) is on there because the same people made it under the name the Dee Gees, and the three Nirvana albums open the route because that is where Dave Grohl's line and Pat Smear's line begin.

Nate Mendel has not missed a record since 1997
Dave Grohl is the obvious long line, credited at 15 of the 16 stations. He is absent only from Bleach, where Chad Channing drums. The line I find more interesting to point at is Nate Mendel's.
Mendel's bass joins at The Colour and the Shape in 1997 and calls at every station after it, twelve releases in all, right through to Your Favorite Toy in 2026. That is 29 years without a gap.
On the print it reads as one unbroken stripe crossing the whole width while almost everything around it stops, restarts or branches away.
Four drummers sit on this map, and one line simply stops
The drum stool is the most eventful part of the design. Grohl plays everything on the 1995 debut including the drums, which is why that station carries only two credited names. William Goldsmith appears once, credited for "Doll" and the slow intro to "Up in Arms" on The Colour and the Shape, with uncredited work on three more tracks, and then his line ends.
Taylor Hawkins carries ten credits on my sheet. Nine of them are full album credits, running from There Is Nothing Left to Lose in 1999 through to Hail Satin in July 2021, and his line thickens as it goes: not just drums, but percussion, backing vocals, piano on "Summer's End", lead vocals and rhythm guitar on "Cold Day in the Sun", lead vocals again on track 9 of Concrete and Gold. The tenth is earlier and easy to miss, three bonus tracks on the tenth anniversary edition of The Colour and the Shape.
The line stops after Hail Satin. But Here We Are in 2023 is the first station with no Hawkins credit since 1999, and no drummer is credited at that station on my sheet at all. Ilan Rubin's line begins fresh at Your Favorite Toy in 2026, the band's twelfth studio album and his first with them. Plotting that gap was the hardest hour of the whole build.
Pat Smear appears on In Utero, leaves, returns for one track, then stays
Pat Smear is the other name that crosses both bands. He is credited on In Utero in 1993 for rhythm guitar and backing vocals on live tracks, then on The Colour and the Shape in 1997, and then his line drops away entirely for three albums.
It reappears in 2007 for a single credit, rhythm guitar on "Let It Die" from Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. From Wasting Light in 2011 he is credited at every station to 2026. Ten stations in total on my sheet, nine of them Foo Fighters releases and one of them Nirvana.
Drawn as a tube line, a ten-year absence like that is instantly legible in a way a paragraph never is. You see it as literal empty space.
Concrete and Gold is where a Beatle turns up on drums
Nineteen musicians are credited on Concrete and Gold in 2017, and the guest bench is the strangest on the map. These are the names that branch off it.

Every one of those is a short branch line coming off a single station and going nowhere else. On a wall, that clustering is what makes people lean in.
Rami Jaffee arrived as a guest and is still there in 2026
Rami Jaffee first appears on In Your Honor in 2005 as a guest keyboard player on six tracks: "Still", "What If I Do?", "Another Round", "Over and Out", "On the Mend" and "Cold Day in the Sun". He is on the map continuously after that, nine releases through to Your Favorite Toy in 2026, where he is credited with piano, keyboards and theremin on "Spit Shine".
That is a guest line quietly turning into a spine, and you only notice it when the whole run is laid out at once. In Your Honor also brought in John Paul Jones on piano and mandolin, Norah Jones on "Virginia Moon" and Josh Homme on rhythm guitar for "Razor". Brian May is on the album before it, playing guitar on "Tired of You" from One by One.
Why a map reads better than a poster
A poster gives you one image. This gives a fan something to argue with, because every line on it comes from a credit I checked rather than a general impression of who was in the band.
My rule is that a producer only gets a line if they are also credited with playing something. That is why Butch Vig appears for percussion on "Back & Forth" from Wasting Light, Nick Raskulinecz for double bass on "On the Mend", and Tony Visconti for the string arrangement on "I Am a River". Producers who only produce are not lines, however famous.

Do session players get the same treatment as band members?
Yes, and that is the point. A saxophonist on one track gets a named branch line exactly as a founding member gets a main line, which is how the guests become visible.
