Gifts for Someone Born in the 1970s: 9 Maps of the Records and Films of Their Teens
The best gifts for someone born in the 1970s come from the years 1989 to 1999, when they were buying their first CDs, and that is what my born in the 1970s collection is built from: six discography maps and three film plot maps. Each print draws a band's albums, or a film's plot, as a London Underground style map, with every credited musician or character as a line.
Someone born in 1975 was 14 when Bleach came out and 22 when OK Computer did. Both are on these maps, and so is the whole Britpop argument in between.
The Six Music Maps
- Oasis discography art print: seven albums, 1994 to 2008
- Radiohead discography art print: 17 albums, The Smile and the solo records included
- Foo Fighters discography art print: Nirvana and the Foo Fighters as one network, 16 records to 2026
- Manic Street Preachers discography art print: 15 albums, 1992 to 2025
- The Charlatans discography art print: 14 studio albums
- Muse discography art print: ten albums, three credits on the debut and 72 on a later one
The Three Film Plot Maps
- Back to the Future plot map: 1985 and 1955 drawn as parallel routes, with the clock tower where they touch
- Dirty Dancing plot map: a summer at Kellerman's as a network, 1987
- James Bond films map: 25 Eon films, six Bonds, and a Q who outlasts them all
Oasis or Blur Is Not the Question Any More
Nobody born in the 1970s needs reminding of August 1995. The maps give that argument somewhere to go. The Oasis print runs seven albums and stops in 2008, and the surprise on it is a Hollywood actor playing on the third record. The Radiohead print runs 17 albums and keeps going through The Smile and the solo records, and only Thom Yorke's line calls at every station.
The brothers get their own prints too. The Noel Gallagher discography art print and the Liam Gallagher discography art print start from the same seven Oasis stations and go in two directions.
50th Birthday Gifts for Music Fans
Anyone born in 1976 turns 50 this year. A 50th is the birthday where a framed print stops being a strange idea and starts being the obvious one, and these are Giclée prints on 230gsm acid-free paper, drawn manually in CAD with no AI at any stage, so they will still be on the wall at 60.
The map I would choose for a 50th is the Foo Fighters print, because it draws Nirvana and the Foo Fighters as one network with Dave Grohl's line running straight across the join. Someone born in the 1970s lived through both halves and has never seen them on one sheet.
| If they... | The map to buy | What they will find on it |
|---|---|---|
| Still own a Knebworth ticket stub | Oasis | The actor on album three |
| Think OK Computer is the answer | Radiohead | One line at all 17 stations |
| Wore the smiley face t-shirt | Foo Fighters | A two-person debut after In Utero |
| Can name the fourth Manic | Manic Street Preachers | A Velvet Underground founder on one station |
| Have seen Dirty Dancing more than ten times | Dirty Dancing | The whole summer, not just the lift |
The Manics and the Charlatans: Bands That Lost Someone and Kept Going
Both bands have a station where a line stops and the band does not. The Manics map runs 15 albums from 1992 to 2025 as a four-piece that became three, with a guest list that fills the space: a Velvet Underground founder, a Guns N' Roses bassist, and a Berlin pub choir. The Charlatans map has 14 studio albums, with Tim Burgess and Martin Blunt as the two backbone lines and three other chairs that changed hands, one of them more than once.
Sizes and Framing
Every map in this collection comes in A3 (420 x 297 mm), A2 (594 x 420 mm), and A1 (841 x 594 mm), plus the separate 16 x 12 in, 24 x 18 in, and 36 x 24 in formats for the US, Canada, and Australia. Every size is supplied unframed or ready to hang in a wood frame.
Related Music Maps
These six maps, plus Levellers, Lloyd Cole, and Paul Weller, make up my 1990s music maps collection. If the person was born at the end of the decade and grew up on Arctic Monkeys rather than Oasis, the born in the 1980s collection is the next one along. For the films, the Dirty Dancing plot explained post shows what the map holds.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good gift for someone born in the 1970s who loves music?
A discography map of the band whose first album they bought on CD. For someone born in the 1970s that usually means Oasis, Radiohead, Nirvana and the Foo Fighters (one map), the Manics, The Charlatans, or Muse, which is why those six maps are in this collection.
Are Blur on a map?
Not yet. The Britpop maps I have drawn so far are Oasis, the two Gallagher solo maps, The Charlatans, and Paul Weller. If Blur is the only answer, the art print gift card holds the choice open until the map exists.
What is not on these maps?
Live albums, compilations, and greatest hits sets are not drawn. The Foo Fighters map opens with the three Nirvana studio albums, labelled on the print. Each map stops at the most recent studio album when I drew it.
Which of these maps was updated most recently?
The Foo Fighters map, which now reaches Your Favorite Toy from 2026, and the Manics map, which reaches 2025.
If You Still Cannot Decide
The art print gift card covers any map on the site, and for someone born in the 1970s the choice between Oasis and Radiohead is one they would rather make themselves. If you know they wore the smiley face t-shirt, it is the Foo Fighters map, and they will look for the join first.
