Here is the Dirty Dancing movie plot explained as a structure rather than a memory. Dirty Dancing (1987) is set across a single summer at a Catskills resort in 1963, and follows Frances "Baby" Houseman and dance instructor Johnny Castle through a story about class, independence and consequence. Because the whole thing happens inside one season, every turning point has a fixed place in the running order, which is what makes it worth drawing flat.

Drawn out, Dirty Dancing is a tightly built coming-of-age story. Baby's line widens its reach as she gains confidence, meeting more of the resort's staff and fewer of her family's guests. Johnny's runs the other way, starting in guarded professionalism and ending somewhere far more exposed.
The film's real structure is class, not romance. The romance is what happens when the two collide. Baby's family holiday among the paying guests, and Johnny, Penny and the rest of the entertainment staff live a separate life at the same resort. On the map that split is visible as two clusters of lines that barely touch until Baby crosses over to learn the mambo. The Kellerman family lines sit above all of it, rarely meeting the staff routes until the last act forces them together.

Penny's line carries the part that never reaches a poster
The abortion subplot is the section of Dirty Dancing that rarely appears on merchandise, and it is the engine of the entire second act. Penny's illegal procedure, arranged in secret, goes wrong, so Baby steps in and dances in her place, which is what puts Baby and Johnny together at all. Drawing Penny as her own line running alongside and underneath the central romance makes that cause and effect legible in a way the final scene on its own never shows. Almost every later intersection on the map traces back to that single crossing.

Dr Houseman's reversal closes the loop
Baby's father spends most of the film disapproving of Johnny, and his change of heart, arriving to watch his daughter dance and finally understanding what actually happened to Penny, is the quiet resolution that makes the famous last scene work. His line moves from one side of the resort to the other by the end, mirroring Baby's own crossing earlier in the story. It is a small structural echo, and it is the kind of thing you notice on a diagram long before you notice it on a rewatch.
Why the ending lands the way it does
The final performance works because the map shows how much was built to reach it. Every rehearsal, misunderstanding and reconciliation is a station on the way, and the lift the film is remembered for is set up several stops earlier rather than sprung on the audience.
That is the sort of thing a chronological diagram makes obvious. The soundtrack does a great deal of work too, but the emotional payoff is structural before it is musical.
