This band split, carried on without its singer, split again, and reassembled. Drawn as lines that stop being a story you have to be told and become something you can see in a second.

The guests are the other reward, running from The Doors to Joy Division and Blondie, by way of a sitar and a dulcimer. It rewards every closer look.

Contributing musicians on the map

The finished print carries 61 credited musicians, ensembles and orchestras across 15 records. Only one line runs the full length of it, and it is not the singer's.

Will Sergeant plays on all 15. Ian McCulloch is on 14, absent only from Reverberation in 1990, where Noel Burke sings instead, and that break is the clearest thing on the print.

Pete de Freitas drums on the first five albums and his line stops there. Les Pattinson's bass runs eight records, from Crocodiles through to What Are You Going to Do with Your Life? in 1999.

Reverberation is the busiest of the band's own albums, with 12 credited musicians, matched on the map only by the 2018 re-recordings. Six of those twelve brought instruments nobody expects on a Bunnymen record: Punita Gupta on sitar, Gurdev Singh on tar shahanai, Esmail Sheikh on dholak, John Mayer on tambura, John Leach on dulcimer and Shanker Ganguly on harmonium.

The 1987 self-titled album carries two credits nobody expects on the same record. Ray Manzarek of The Doors plays keyboards on Bedbugs and Ballyhoo, and Stephen Morris of Joy Division and New Order plays drums on a cover of Soul Kitchen.

What Are You Going to Do with Your Life? in 1999 is the second busiest at 11, with the Fun Lovin' Criminals guesting on two tracks, Guy Pratt on bass and the London Metropolitan Orchestra across the record.

Liam Gallagher sings backing vocals on Nothing Lasts Forever from Evergreen in 1997. Youth plays bass and produces the whole of Meteorites in 2014, a three-name station and the sparsest on the map.

The 2026 album: Apples for Isaac

The map now runs to Apples for Isaac, released on 18 September 2026 and the first album of new material since Meteorites in 2014. Twelve years is the longest gap between any two stations on the print.

Ten musicians are credited there, which makes it the joint third busiest of the 13 band albums, level with Siberia in 2005. After the three names on Meteorites, that is a considerable crowd arriving at once.

Clem Burke of Blondie drums on ten of the album's eleven tracks, recorded before his death in 2025, and his is one of the shortest lines on the map: a single stop, right at the end.

Four lines reach forward to get there. Simon Finley last drummed on Siberia in 2005, Gordy Goudie last played on The Fountain in 2009, and Barrie Barlow and Ste Brannan both came in on the 2018 re-recordings. Mike Smith, Peter Riley and Erica Nockalls on strings and keyboards are new arrivals, with McCulloch producing.
