Anatomy of a Film Plot Map

A film plot map lays out a whole movie as a transit map. The key scenes become stations, the characters become lines, and wherever characters share a scene, their lines meet. It's a plot map and a character map in one, and it shows the shape of movie plots you've watched many times but never seen drawn. You can see them all in my movie plot map art prints.

Plot maps and character maps: what's the difference?

A plot map follows what happens. A character map follows who it happens to. Most diagrams of movie plots choose one or the other; my maps draw both on the same print.

Plot map Character map
Follows The story's events, in order The people and how they connect
Answers What happens next? Who meets whom, and when?
Usually drawn as A timeline of scenes A web of relationships
On my maps The stations The lines

Because the two are drawn together, you can read a film either way. Follow the stations, and you get the plot, scene by scene. Follow one line, and you get a single character's journey: where they enter the story, who they cross paths with, and where their line ends.

How I research a movie plot

I start from the screenplay and a scene-by-scene analysis of the film, not a single viewing. I log each key scene in order in a research spreadsheet, then note which characters appear in it. That sheet tells me where each character enters, who they meet, and when they leave the story.

The anatomy of a plot map

On the map What it shows
Station A key scene or story beat, in the order it happens
Line A character, named on the map
Interchange A scene where several characters meet
End of a line The point where that character leaves the story

Scenes become stations. The stations run in story order, so reading along the map walks you through the plot.

Characters become lines. Each character gets their own line, calling at every scene they appear in. The lead might run the full length of the map, while a minor character only calls at a stop or two.

Shared scenes become interchanges. Where characters cross paths, their lines meet. The busiest interchanges are usually the turning points of the film.

What a plot map shows that the film hides

Every film gives the map a different problem to solve, and that's what makes each one worth drawing.

  • Two timelines: my Back to the Future plot map draws 1985 and 1955 as parallel routes, so you can see exactly where the two lines touch.
  • Two halves of one story: on my Jaws plot map, the town plot and the boat plot meet at a single station.
  • A tangled story made clear: my Blade Runner plot map gives a film many people struggle to follow a route you can trace.
  • A character map across a franchise: my James Bond films map works at a bigger scale, with the 25 Eon Productions films from 1962 to 2021 as stations and the recurring characters as lines.

How I draw each plot map

I draw every plot map manually, line by line, in CAD vector software on my PC. I place each station, route each character's line, and untangle every crossing myself. No AI and no automation: the map comes out of the research, and the two can't be separated.

From plot map to art print

Each plot map becomes a Giclée art print on 230gsm premium fine art paper, with a textured matte finish that's archival and acid-free. Each one comes unframed or framed.

Plot map FAQ

Is a plot map the same as a character map?

Not quite. A plot map follows the events of a film in order, while a character map shows the people and how they connect. My maps combine the two: the stations carry the plot, and the lines carry the characters.

Will a plot map spoil the film?

It lays out the whole story, so it's best for people who've already seen it. For fans who know the film well, it's a new way of seeing something familiar.

Where does the information come from?

From the screenplay and a scene-by-scene analysis of the film, logged in my research spreadsheets before any drawing starts.

Why isn't every scene on the map?

I map the key scenes and story beats, the moments that move the plot or bring characters together, so the map stays readable on the wall.

Do you use AI to make the maps?

No. I research and draw every plot map myself.
