In short: A Joy Division and New Order discography tube map art print that draws every credited musician as a tube line across the two interconnected catalogues, with Unknown Pleasures, Closer, Power, Corruption & Lies and Technique as the stations where those lines converge. A considered gift for Joy Division and New Order fans, ready to frame and give. Giclée on 230gsm textured matte fine art paper, archival and acid-free. Available in A2 or A1 (US sizing 24x18in and 36x24in), unframed or in a black wooden frame. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.

I designed this Joy Division and New Order discography map so every credited musician runs as their own named line across the two connected catalogues, calling at each album they played on, drawn in the style of a classic tube map. The stations run chronologically from Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures and Closer, with Ian Curtis's line ending in 1980, through the transformation into New Order from Movement, to Power, Corruption & Lies, Technique and the later records. It is wall art for fans who know both bands, and a ready-made gift for anyone who came in through one of them.

Why this Joy Division and New Order discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep

If you are buying for a Joy Division or New Order fan, this goes past the obvious present. I research every map deeply, working from liner notes and session credits, so the credits are right, which lets the person receiving it follow the route from Manchester post-punk to the dancefloor. It makes a birthday or Christmas gift for the fan in your life, the kind of present that gets framed and kept rather than opened once and shelved.

Contributing musicians on the map

Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris are the two unbroken lines, running from Unknown Pleasures in 1979 all the way through to Music Complete in 2015, with Ian Curtis's line ending at Closer in 1980. Peter Hook's bass runs alongside them from the very start to Lost Sirens in 2013, stopping short of Music Complete. Gillian Gilbert joins the New Order line-up from Movement in 1981, and Phil Cunningham's guitar arrives at Waiting for the Sirens' Call in 2005.

The guest branch lines cluster in the later New Order records. Get Ready in 2001 brings in Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins on guest vocals, along with Bobby Gillespie and guitarist Andrew Innes of Primal Scream. Music Complete in 2015 opens wider again, with Iggy Pop, Brandon Flowers of The Killers and La Roux all appearing as one-off spurs off the main line.

How I make each print

Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or supplied in a black wooden frame, ready to hang as art prints in a hallway, living room or studio.

FAQ

How does Joy Division become New Order?
After Ian Curtis's death in 1980, the remaining members, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris, continued as New Order from the album Movement in 1981.

When did Gillian Gilbert join?
From Movement in 1981, becoming part of the core New Order line-up.

Does Peter Hook appear on every album?
Almost. His bass runs from Unknown Pleasures in 1979 through to Lost Sirens in 2013, but he is not credited on Music Complete in 2015, so his line ends before the last station.

Who are the notable guest vocalists?
Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins and Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream both guest on Get Ready in 2001. Music Complete in 2015 brings in Iggy Pop, Brandon Flowers of The Killers and La Roux.

What frame options are there?
Unframed, or a black wooden frame, ready to hang.
