Gifts for Someone Born in the 1990s: Ten Music Maps, One Film Map, and Why Oasis Is on It
The best gifts for someone born in the 1990s come from roughly 2003 to 2020, the years between their first phone and their first flat, and that is what my born in the 1990s collection holds: ten discography maps and the James Bond films map. Each print draws a band's albums, or a film series, as a London Underground style map, with every credited musician or character as a line.
This is the first of my birth-decade collections where I had to argue with myself about the selection, so I have written the argument down. If you are buying for someone born in the 1990s, or later, the reasoning is probably more use to you than the list.
The Ten Music Maps
- Taylor Swift discography art print, Part One: six albums, 2006 to 2017, from the debut to reputation
- Arctic Monkeys discography art print: seven albums, 2006 to 2022, from 11 credited names to 28
- Mumford and Sons discography art print: eight releases, 2009 to 2026
- Muse discography art print: ten albums, three credits on the debut and 72 on a later one
- Foo Fighters discography art print: Nirvana and the Foo Fighters as one network, 16 records to 2026
- Red Hot Chili Peppers discography art print: 13 albums, 1984 to 2022, and a guitar line that leaves twice
- Lainey Wilson discography art print: eight releases, 2006 to 2024, 34 credited contributors, one of them a dog
- Oasis discography art print: seven albums, 1994 to 2008, with Johnny Depp on the third
- Liam Gallagher discography art print: 13 records across Oasis, Beady Eye, and the solo years, 108 credited musicians
- Noel Gallagher discography art print: 11 records, 1994 to 2023, Oasis and the High Flying Birds
The Film Map
- James Bond films map: all 25 Eon films from 1962 to 2021, six Bonds, and one Q who played the part for 36 years
Someone born in the 1990s has only ever known one Bond properly. Daniel Craig's run started with Casino Royale in 2006, when the oldest of them were 16, and ended with No Time to Die in 2021. The map draws every recurring character as a line across all 25 films, so the Craig era sits at the right-hand end of a much longer network, which is how a 30-year-old will discover that the longest unbroken line is not Bond's.
How I Chose: Thirteen to Twenty-Five
My rule for every birth-decade collection is the same. What was on their phone, or in their bedroom, between the ages of 13 and 25? For someone born between 1990 and 1999 that window runs from about 2003 to 2024, and I sorted the maps into three piles.
Solid. Taylor Swift and Arctic Monkeys both released their debut albums in 2006, when this cohort was between seven and sixteen. Nobody born in the 1990s needs those two explained. Mumford and Sons' Sigh No More in 2009 was a university record for the older end. Muse were stadium headliners from Absolution in 2003 to The 2nd Law in 2012, which is the whole of this cohort's school years. The Foo Fighters are a 1990s band, but their biggest British years, Wembley in 2007 and Wasting Light in 2011, landed squarely in this window, and the map runs the Nirvana records too, so it covers the band they found by working backwards.
Debatable. Red Hot Chili Peppers are here for By the Way in 2002 and Stadium Arcadium in 2006, two records that were everywhere during this cohort's teens, though the band's audience skews older. Lainey Wilson is here for an American buyer in their twenties, who will know every word, and means much less to a British one, in the same way Cody Johnson does on the 1980s page.
The Oasis question. Strictly, the seven Oasis albums belong to people born in the 1970s and 1980s. Dig Out Your Soul, the last one, came out in 2008. Then the reunion was announced in 2024, and the ticket queues were full of people in their late twenties who had never seen the band and were not going to miss it. I put Oasis, Liam, and Noel on this page for that generation. If the person you are buying for was not in that queue, buy the Taylor Swift map instead.
What Is Not Here, and Why
Radiohead sit on the 1980s page, because In Rainbows in 2007 fits this window but the audience that queued for it was older. Cody Johnson and Dierks Bentley are on the 2000s music maps page and skew older still. Nirvana is on the Foo Fighters map, which is where I think it belongs for this cohort. The honest gap is anyone whose first album arrived after 2010. Lainey Wilson is the only one on the page, and I am working on it.
Two Bands That Got Wider While They Watched
The thing a map can show that a list cannot is a band getting bigger in public. Arctic Monkeys credit 11 names on the 2006 debut and 28 by 2016, and the later stations are visibly wider than the Sheffield ones. Muse credit three musicians on their first album and 72 on a later one, once the orchestras and choirs arrive.
Someone born in the 1990s was at school for the whole of both of those stories, from the first single to the stadium, and the map is that story drawn in station widths.
30th Birthday Gifts for Music Fans
Anyone born in 1996 turns 30 this year. A 30th is the first birthday where a print on the wall starts to beat a bottle, and these are Giclée prints on 230gsm acid-free paper, drawn manually in CAD with no AI at any stage, with every credited musician researched from the album credits.
For a 30th I would pick the Taylor Swift Part One map for almost anyone born in the 1990s, because the lines that change between Red and 1989 are the moment her music changed, and they will know exactly which albums those are. For a man of the same age who would rather die than own a Taylor Swift print, the Arctic Monkeys map does the same job for Sheffield.
| If they... | The map to buy | What they will find on it |
|---|---|---|
| Own every era on vinyl | Taylor Swift, Part One | The lines that change between Red and 1989 |
| Had the first Arctic Monkeys album on their iPod | Arctic Monkeys | Where Sheffield turned into an orchestra |
| Queued for the reunion tickets | Oasis | Johnny Depp, Paul Weller, and Johnny Marr as guest spurs |
| Picked a brother | Liam or Noel Gallagher | Two maps, and one musician who crosses both brothers |
| Know who sings the choir on Under the Bridge | Red Hot Chili Peppers | John Frusciante's line leaving and returning twice |
| Drive with country radio on | Lainey Wilson | A Myspace EP at one end and a credited dog at the other |
| Think Craig was the best Bond | James Bond films map | The longest line belongs to Q |
The Banjo That Stops Halfway
Mumford and Sons are the band someone born in the 1990s either sang along to in a field or has spent fifteen years being told are just a banjo band. The map runs eight releases from 2009 to 2026 and shows the banjo line stopping halfway across, which is an argument the records cannot make on their own.
Sizes and Framing
Every map in this collection comes in A3 (420 x 297 mm), A2 (594 x 420 mm), and A1 (841 x 594 mm), plus the separate 16 x 12 in, 24 x 18 in, and 36 x 24 in formats for the US, Canada, and Australia. Every size is supplied unframed or ready to hang in a black wood frame.
Related Music Maps
Taylor Swift, Arctic Monkeys, and Mumford and Sons also sit in my 2000s music maps collection, and Lainey Wilson and the two Gallaghers in the 2010s music maps collection. If the person is a Taylor Swift fan who wants the later albums and the re-recordings, the Taylor Swift albums in order post explains how the three maps divide the catalogue. For the Gallaghers, Presents for Oasis Fans compares all three maps. For the films, James Bond films in order walks through all 25.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good gift for someone born in the 1990s who loves music?
A discography map of the band whose first album they bought, which for someone born in the 1990s is most likely Taylor Swift, Arctic Monkeys, Mumford and Sons, Muse, or the Foo Fighters. Those five are the core of the collection, with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lainey Wilson, Oasis, and the two Gallagher brothers alongside.
Why is Oasis in a 1990s-born collection?
Because of the reunion. The albums belong to an older generation, but the 2025 tour did not, and a lot of people in their late twenties saw the band for the first time. If the person you are buying for was not interested in the reunion, this is not their map.
Does this work for someone born after 2000?
Mostly, yes. Taylor Swift, Arctic Monkeys, and Lainey Wilson carry straight through. The further past 2000 you go, the less the Foo Fighters, Muse, and the Chili Peppers will mean, and the more Taylor Swift will.
What is not on these maps?
Live albums, compilations, and greatest hits sets are not drawn. The Taylor Swift map in this collection is Part One of three and stops at reputation in 2017. The Lainey Wilson map includes three EPs, because that is where her catalogue starts.
Is Casino Royale from 1967 on the Bond map?
No. The map carries the 25 Eon Productions films only, from Dr. No in 1962 to No Time to Die in 2021. The 1967 Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again are not on the print.
If You Still Cannot Decide
The art print gift card covers any map on the site, and for someone born in the 1990s whose taste you cannot place between Nashville and Sheffield, it is the safer choice. If you know they own every Taylor Swift era on vinyl, buy Part One.
