A gift for John Lydon fans who are tired of him being frozen in 1977, because this maps seventeen releases and the Sex Pistols album is only the first station. They own the records already. What comes after it is far stranger than what happens on it.

Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Produced in A1 only, with US sizing at 36 x 24 in, unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.

The stations run from Never Mind the Bollocks in 1977, through the whole Public Image Ltd catalogue and Lydon's solo record, to End of World in 2023.

Why this John Lydon and PiL tube map art makes a gift fans keep

Forty-six years sit on this print, and only one line crosses all of it. Everything else is a short, sharp arrival and departure.

One station in the middle of it carries a jazz drummer, a Cream drummer, a shred guitarist and a Japanese composer on the same record. The full story on your wall.

Contributing musicians on the map

The Sex Pistols station is more precise than most people expect. Steve Jones plays guitar and most of the bass, Paul Cook plays drums, Glen Matlock plays bass on Anarchy in the UK, and Sid Vicious plays on two tracks only.

Public Image: First Issue brings in Keith Levene, Jim Walker and Jah Wobble, whose credit includes bass, vocals and a fire extinguisher. Levene runs on through Metal Box, The Flowers of Romance and Commercial Zone before leaving the map.

Jah Wobble's line is short and early, ending after the 1980 live album. Martin Atkins takes the drum chair across five stations through the early 1980s.

The album in 1986 is the strangest thing on the print. Bill Laswell produced and played bass, and the record credits Ginger Baker and Tony Williams on drums, Steve Vai on guitar, Ryuichi Sakamoto on Fairlight, Bernie Worrell on organ, Shankar on electric violin and Steve Turre on didgeridoo.

The late 1980s brought in John McGeoch on guitar, Allan Dias on bass, Bruce Smith on drums and Lu Edmonds. That What Is Not adds the Tower of Power horn section.

Bruce Smith and Lu Edmonds both leave and come back. Their lines break in the early 1990s and rejoin for This is PiL in 2012, running on with Scott Firth to End of World.

How do I make each print?

Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or framed, ready to hang in a hallway, living room or studio.

Size UK USA / CAN / AUS equivalent Orientation
A2 594 x 420 mm (23 x 16 in) 24 x 18 in Landscape
A1 841 x 594 mm (33 x 23 in) 36 x 24 in Landscape

FAQ

How much of this is Public Image Ltd?
Most of it. Fourteen of the seventeen stations are PiL, alongside the Sex Pistols album, the 1996 reunion live record and Lydon's solo album.

How much does Sid Vicious actually play?
Bass on two tracks of Never Mind the Bollocks. Steve Jones plays most of the rest.

Is Ginger Baker really on a PiL record?
Yes, drumming on the album in 1986, alongside Steve Vai, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Tony Williams.

Who lasted the longest apart from Lydon?
Bruce Smith and Lu Edmonds, whose lines broke in the 1990s and returned from the 2012 album onwards.

What is the fire extinguisher credit?
Jah Wobble's, on Fodderstompf, printed on the sleeve of the first PiL album exactly that way.

What are the framing options?
Unframed, or supplied framed and ready to hang.
