No band in this catalogue changes shape as often. Two men run the whole length of the map and almost everyone else arrives, leaves, and in one case comes back years after everybody assumed they had gone for good.

Drawn as lines, the band's history stops being a list of names and becomes something you can follow with a finger. It rewards every closer look.

Contributing musicians on the discography tube map

Mick Fleetwood and John McVie are the only two credited on all 17 albums, a span of 35 years. Everything else on the map moves around them.

Peter Green's line is the one that surprises people. It runs through the early blues records, stops, and then reappears twice: once on Penguin in 1973 and again on Tusk in 1979, long after he had left the band.

Christine McVie's line starts earlier than most fans expect. She appears on Mr Wonderful in 1968 and Then Play On in 1969, credited under her own name, Christine Perfect, before joining properly from Kiln House in 1970 and staying to the end.

Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks arrive together on the self-titled 1975 album. Nicks then has exactly one gap in her line: she is absent from Time in 1995.

Bob Brunning has the shortest line on the map. He plays bass on the first album and nothing else, because John McVie replaced him.

The station counts are not where you would expect them either. Time in 1995 and Say You Will in 2003 are the two busiest, with thirteen credited musicians each. Rumours has five. The most famous record here carries one of the smallest casts on the whole print.

Later oddities are worth hunting for. The USC Trojan Marching Band shares a single line on Tusk, Sheryl Crow appears on Say You Will, and three second-generation names have stations of their own: Lucy Fleetwood, Mick Fleetwood's daughter, on backing vocals on Time in 1995, and on Say You Will in 2003 both Molly McVie, John McVie's daughter, and Jessica James Nicks, Stevie Nicks' niece.
