Morrissey Albums in Order: All 18 Studio Albums

Morrissey albums in order run to eighteen released studio records across two careers: four with The Smiths between 1984 and 1987, then fourteen solo albums from Viva Hate in 1988 to Make-Up Is a Lie in March 2026. I have drawn all of them as stations on one tube map, with every credited musician running through it as a named line, and I have included one finished album that was never released. That last decision is the reason this map has nineteen stations rather than eighteen.

Below is the chronological list first, because that is what most people come here for. After it are the things I only noticed because building the credit grid forced me to read every sleeve, album by album, before I could draw a single line.

Morrissey Albums in Order, 1984 to 2026

Four Smiths albums, then fourteen solo records over thirty-eight years. The right-hand column is the credit I found most worth knowing on each one.

Album Year A credit worth knowing
The Smiths 1984 Paul Carrack on piano and organ, three tracks
Meat Is Murder 1985 The four-piece alone, no outside players
The Queen Is Dead 1986 The four-piece alone again
Strangeways, Here We Come 1987 Stephen Street on bass and guitar
Viva Hate 1988 Vini Reilly of The Durutti Column on guitar
Kill Uncle 1991 Mark E. Nevin of Fairground Attraction on guitar
Your Arsenal 1992 Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer both arrive
Vauxhall and I 1994 Jonny Bridgwood on bass, Woodie Taylor on drums
Southpaw Grammar 1995 Spencer Cobrin on drums
Maladjusted 1997 Boz Boorer credited on clarinet as well as guitar
You Are the Quarry 2004 Roger Manning on keyboards, Dean Butterworth on drums
Ringleader of the Tormentors 2006 Ennio Morricone arranges the strings; Jesse Tobias joins
Years of Refusal 2009 Jeff Beck and Chrissie Hynde, one track each
World Peace Is None of Your Business 2014 Martin Gould on nine listed instruments at once
Low in High School 2017 Gustavo Manzur and Mando Lopez arrive
California Son 2019 Billie Joe Armstrong, Petra Haden and Ed Droste
I Am Not a Dog on a Chain 2020 Thelma Houston on vocals, Greg Leisz on pedal steel
Make-Up Is a Lie 2026 Alain Whyte back after twenty years away

The nineteenth station is Bonfire of Teenagers, finished in 2022 and still not released. I put it on the map because the credits exist and because leaving it off would hide the busiest guest list in the whole catalogue.

Stephen Street Is the Only Name That Crosses the 1987 Break

When The Smiths ended, the line-up ended with it. Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce run beside Morrissey across all four Smiths albums and then stop together, which on the map is three parallel lines terminating at the same station.

One name carries on. Stephen Street is credited on bass and guitar on Strangeways, Here We Come in 1987, and again on Viva Hate in 1988, which makes him the only person other than Morrissey with a credit on both sides of the split.

That is a small fact on paper and a very visible one in a drawing. It is a single thread holding two otherwise separate halves of a career together.

Boz Boorer Has Played on Three Times as Many Records as Johnny Marr

This is the finding that surprises people most, and it is simple arithmetic once the grid is built. Johnny Marr is credited on four Morrissey-related albums. Boz Boorer is credited on twelve.

Boorer arrives on Your Arsenal in 1992 and is still there on Bonfire of Teenagers thirty years later, picking up clarinet, saxophone, mandolin and zither along the way. On the map his is the longest unbroken line after Morrissey's own.

It is not a comment on anyone's importance. It is just what happens when you draw a career by credits rather than by reputation.

Alain Whyte Left After Ringleader and Came Back Twenty Years Later

Alain Whyte co-wrote and played guitar on six albums in a row, from Your Arsenal in 1992 through to Ringleader of the Tormentors in 2006. Then his credit stops.

He is absent from Years of Refusal, World Peace Is None of Your Business, Low in High School, California Son, I Am Not a Dog on a Chain and Bonfire of Teenagers. He reappears on Make-Up Is a Lie in 2026, twenty years after the last time.

Gaps like that are the single best argument for drawing a discography instead of listing it. A list gives you two separate entries. A map gives you a line that stops, leaves a long empty stretch, and starts again.

Four Names on The Queen Is Dead, More Than Twenty on California Son

Meat Is Murder and The Queen Is Dead carry four credited musicians each: Morrissey, Marr, Rourke and Joyce, and nobody else. Two of the most celebrated British albums of the 1980s were made by four people in a room.

California Son in 2019 and I Am Not a Dog on a Chain in 2020 each carry more than twenty credited names. Group vocalists, a choir, a fiddle player, two people credited for laughing and one dog.

Read left to right, the map widens. That change in density is something a tube map can draw and a numbered list cannot.

Mick Ronson Produced Your Arsenal and Still Has No Line

My rule across every map is that a producer only gets a musician line if they are also credited playing something. It keeps the map about who made the sound rather than who signed off on it.

Mick Ronson produced Your Arsenal in 1992 and is credited for production alone, so he does not appear as a line. Stephen Street produced too, but he is also credited on bass and guitar, so he does.

Two producers, the same album era, opposite outcomes. It is the clearest example of that rule I have in the whole catalogue.

The Guest Stations: Names That Appear Exactly Once

One-off contributors become branch lines, short spurs off the main run. These are the ones I would point at first.

Guest Credit Album
Paul Carrack Piano and organ, three tracks The Smiths (1984)
Ennio Morricone String arrangement, Dear God Please Help Me Ringleader of the Tormentors (2006)
Jeff Beck Guitar, one track Years of Refusal (2009)
Chrissie Hynde Backing vocals, one track Years of Refusal (2009)
Billie Joe Armstrong Backing vocals, one track California Son (2019)
Little Willie Iniesta Dog barking, one track California Son (2019)
Thelma Houston Vocals, one track I Am Not a Dog on a Chain (2020)
Iggy Pop Credited on Ha Ha Harlem Bonfire of Teenagers (2022)
Miley Cyrus Backing vocals, I Am Veronica Bonfire of Teenagers (2022)

Bonfire of Teenagers also carries Flea, Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer, three names from the Red Hot Chili Peppers on one track. For an album nobody can buy, it has the most famous guest list on the sheet.

Sizes, Paper and Framing

The Morrissey discography map comes in A3 at 420 x 297mm, A2 at 594 x 420mm and A1 at 841 x 594mm, and as three separate inch formats, 16 x 12in, 24 x 18in and 36 x 24in. A3 is £35, A2 is £45 and A1 is £65.

Every print is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. You can have it unframed, or in a black wood frame in A2 and A1.

If you want to read the musician names comfortably rather than take the shape in from across a room, go A1. There are nineteen stations and well over a hundred credits on this one, and A2 rewards standing close.

For the other half of the story, the Johnny Marr discography map plots everything he made after 1987, which is a great deal more than most people remember. The Smiths discography map puts both careers on one sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many albums did Morrissey make?

Eighteen released studio albums: four with The Smiths between 1984 and 1987, and fourteen solo albums from Viva Hate in 1988 to Make-Up Is a Lie in March 2026.

What order should I listen to Morrissey's albums in?

Chronological order works well, because the line-up changes are the story. Start with the four Smiths albums, then Viva Hate, and the shift from a fixed band to a rotating cast is audible almost immediately.

Who has played on the most Morrissey albums?

Boz Boorer, with twelve, from Your Arsenal in 1992 to Bonfire of Teenagers. Jesse Tobias is next with eight, from Ringleader of the Tormentors in 2006 onwards.

Are The Smiths and the solo albums on the same map?

Yes. The four Smiths records sit at the left-hand end as a tight bundle of four parallel lines, and everything after 1987 fans out from there.

Why is an unreleased album on the map?

Bonfire of Teenagers was finished in 2022 and has never come out, but the credits are documented and they are remarkable. Leaving it off would have hidden Flea, Chad Smith, Josh Klinghoffer, Iggy Pop and Miley Cyrus.

What is not on the map?

Live albums, compilations, singles and B-sides are all left off by editorial rule, so no Hatful of Hollow and no Bona Drag. Producers are left off too unless they are separately credited playing an instrument, which is why Mick Ronson has no line and Stephen Street does.

Where This Comes From

I research and draw these maps myself, from sleeve credits and session archives rather than from anything automated. Prints of my work are held in the permanent collection at the V&A David Bowie Centre and at the Bruce Springsteen Archives at Monmouth University.

If you are buying for somebody else and would rather they picked their own artist, there is an art print gift card that covers the whole range.
