A gift for Leonard Cohen fans who picture him alone with a guitar, because this shows how crowded some of those records really were, with every credited musician running their own line across 15 albums. They own the records already. This is the company he kept.

Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Produced in A1 only, with US sizing at 36 x 24 in, unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.

The stations run chronologically from Songs of Leonard Cohen in 1967 to Thanks for the Dance in 2019. One-off contributors branch off as short spurs.

Why this Leonard Cohen discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep

The shape of this map is a surprise even to people who know the songs. It runs narrow and quiet for a decade, swells enormously in 1977, then thins out again for the rest of his life.

Not an algorithm - every connection on this map was made by hand, by an obsessive fan. The clustering is the whole point, and it is only visible when the credits are drawn rather than listed.

Contributing musicians on the map

Death of a Ladies' Man in 1977 is the busiest station by a long way, with more than forty credited musicians. That is Phil Spector's production, and it pulls in session players like Hal Blaine and Jim Keltner alongside two names nobody expects on a Cohen record: Bob Dylan and Allen Ginsberg, both on backing vocals.

Jennifer Warnes has the longest line on the map. She first appears on Recent Songs in 1979 and turns up again as late as Thanks for the Dance, forty years later.

A small group of players give the later records their particular sound. John Bilezikjian's oud and Raffi Hakopian's violin recur across three albums each, and Garth Hudson of The Band appears on two.

Anjani Thomas sings across four albums from I'm Your Man onward. The early records are far sparser: Songs from a Room leans on Charlie Daniels, Ron Cornelius and Elkin Bubba Fowler, and Songs of Love and Hate adds Paul Buckmaster's arrangements and the children's voices of the Corona Academy in London.

The final album is its own small gathering. Beck plays Jew's harp and acoustic guitar, Damien Rice and Jessica Staveley-Taylor sing, Daniel Lanois plays piano, and Cohen's son Adam appears on classical guitar.

Alison Krauss sings on Steer Your Way, from You Want It Darker in 2016.
