Jump to a Bond Era

Ever since the release of Dr No in 1962, James Bond has defined the cinematic spy. Suave, sharp, and always with a dry martini in hand, 007 has taken us from tropical islands to icy mountaintops in a film series that spans six decades.

With 25 official movies and several different actors stepping into the tux, the Bond timeline can feel overwhelming. So, what's the correct order to watch them?

Whether you're a lifelong Bond fan or just discovering the series, my James Bond tube map offers a unique visual guide to the characters, actors, and timelines across the entire franchise. Below is the complete list of official James Bond movies in chronological order.

James Bond Movies List: Every 007 Film by Release Year

When I was researching the Bond map, the first thing I had to settle was what "in order" actually means, because there are three defensible answers and they disagree with each other. Release order is the one almost everyone wants: the 25 Eon-produced films as they arrived in cinemas, from Dr. No in 1962 to No Time to Die in 2021.

The other two are worth knowing about. Actor order groups the films by who was wearing the tuxedo, which is how most fans remember them, but it breaks the chronology, because George Lazenby's single outing in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) falls between Sean Connery's You Only Live Twice (1967) and his return in Diamonds Are Forever (1971). Ian Fleming's novels run in a third order again, and the films have never followed it.

I built the map on release order, because it is the only sequence that is a matter of record rather than opinion. Every recurring character runs as their own named line, each film is a station where those lines converge, and the one-off villains branch off as short spurs. You can see the whole franchise that way on the 007 film plot map I drew for it.

How Many James Bond Movies Are There?

There are 25 official James Bond movies, produced by Eon Productions between 1962 and 2021. Six starred Sean Connery, one George Lazenby, seven Roger Moore, two Timothy Dalton, four Pierce Brosnan and five Daniel Craig.

Two more films get counted by mistake, and both sit outside the Eon series. Casino Royale (1967) is a comedy spoof with David Niven as Sir James Bond, made because the rights to Fleming's first novel had been sold separately years earlier. Never Say Never Again (1983) brought Connery back one final time in an unofficial remake of Thunderball, produced through a similar rights loophole. Neither belongs to the official run, which is why the answer is 25 and not 27.

A twenty-sixth Eon film is in development with Denis Villeneuve attached to direct. At the time of writing no actor has been announced and no release date has been confirmed.

James Bond Films: The Sean Connery Era (1962-1971)

  1. Dr. No (1962)
Bond investigates a scientist on a remote island.
  2. From Russia with Love (1963)
Espionage thriller in Cold War Istanbul.
  3. Goldfinger (1964)
    Gold-obsessed villain, famous laser scene.
  4. Thunderball (1965)
    SPECTRE steals nuclear weapons.
  5. You Only Live Twice (1967)
Blofeld in a volcano. Japan setting.
  6. Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
Final Connery film. Vegas and diamonds.

The George Lazenby Interlude

  1. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
Bond marries, then mourns. A fan favourite.

The Roger Moore Era (1973-1985)

  1. Live and Let Die (1973)
  2. The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)
  3. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
  4. Moonraker (1979)
  5. For Your Eyes Only (1981)
  6. Octopussy (1983)
  7. A View to a Kill (1985)

The Timothy Dalton Era (1987-1989)

  1. The Living Daylights (1987)
  2. Licence to Kill (1989)

The Pierce Brosnan Era (1995-2002)

  1. GoldenEye (1995)
  2. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
  3. The World Is Not Enough (1999)
  4. Die Another Day (2002)

The Daniel Craig Era (2006-2021)

  1. Casino Royale (2006)
  2. Quantum of Solace (2008)
  3. Skyfall (2012)
  4. Spectre (2015)
  5. No Time to Die (2021)

Daniel Craig's James Bond Movies in Order

Daniel Craig's five James Bond movies in order are Casino Royale (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015) and No Time to Die (2021). His is the only run in the series that tells one continuous story, and from a mapping point of view that is the most interesting thing about it.

Every Bond before Craig was essentially episodic. You could watch Octopussy before For Your Eyes Only and lose nothing at all. The Craig films carry consequences forward instead: Vesper Lynd's death in Casino Royale, played by Eva Green, drives Quantum of Solace directly, and Madeleine Swann returns from Spectre to become central to No Time to Die, with Christoph Waltz's Blofeld threading through both.

That structure is obvious the moment you draw it out. Judi Dench's M runs from GoldenEye in 1995 all the way to Skyfall, crossing out of the Brosnan era and into Craig's before Ralph Fiennes takes the role over. Ben Whishaw's Q and Naomie Harris's Moneypenny both begin at Skyfall and run to the end. Jeffrey Wright's Felix Leiter is the one I like best on the map: he appears in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, disappears for Skyfall and Spectre entirely, then rejoins at No Time to Die thirteen years later.

Every Actor Who Has Played James Bond, in Order

Six actors have played James Bond in the official Eon series, in this order: Sean Connery (1962 to 1971), George Lazenby (1969), Roger Moore (1973 to 1985), Timothy Dalton (1987 to 1989), Pierce Brosnan (1995 to 2002) and Daniel Craig (2006 to 2021).

Connery and Moore are the only two to have made more than five, with six and seven. Lazenby made one and walked away. Dalton's two are the shortest run of any Bond who was not a one-off, and to my ear they are also the two that read closest to Fleming's novels.

Three more actors have played the character outside that series. Barry Nelson was the first Bond on screen anywhere, in a live American television adaptation of Casino Royale in 1954, where he was rewritten as an American agent called Jimmy Bond. David Niven played him as Sir James Bond in the 1967 spoof. And Connery came back once more for Never Say Never Again in 1983, which makes him the only actor to have played Bond both inside and outside the official run.

The Bonds are only part of it, though, and this is the thing that surprised me most while I was drawing the map. Some of the longest lines belong to people who never played 007 at all. Desmond Llewelyn appeared as Q in seventeen films between From Russia with Love in 1963 and The World Is Not Enough in 1999. Lois Maxwell played Moneypenny in fourteen consecutive films from 1962 to 1985. Bernard Lee was M in the first eleven. Those three lines run further across the map than any single Bond does. I broke that first decade down role by role in my cast breakdown of the Sean Connery era films, where the full 1962 to 1971 table shows how often each part changed hands.

Drawing sixty years of that overlap is the whole reason the map exists. I have built the same structure for Back to the Future and Blade Runner, though neither has anything like Bond's cast list to untangle, and the rest of them sit in the film map collection.

Bonus Films (Unofficial Entries)

  • Casino Royale (1967) is a comedy spoof starring David Niven.
  • Never Say Never Again (1983) sees Connery return in an unofficial remake of Thunderball.
