A gift for Billy Bragg fans who know every word but could not tell you who played on what, because this runs every credited musician as their own line across the records. They already own the albums, and this is the part the sleeves never show.

Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Produced unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.

The stations run chronologically from Life's a Riot with Spy vs Spy in 1983 through to the most recent records. One-off contributors branch off as short spurs.

Why this Billy Bragg discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep

No map I have drawn opens quite like this one. Life's a Riot with Spy vs Spy has exactly one credited musician, so the print begins as a single line with nothing running alongside it.

Everything after that is the story of a solo act slowly acquiring a band. Not an algorithm - every connection on this map was made by hand, by an obsessive fan.

Contributing musicians on the map

The debut is one man alone. By Don't Try This at Home in 1991, the same map features 23 credited musicians, the busiest station in the whole print, with Workers Playtime close behind at 20.

Dave Woodhead's trumpet and flugelhorn are the longest-serving line after Bragg himself, appearing on five records from Brewing Up in 1984 through to William Bloke in 1996.

Johnny Marr turns up on three: Brewing Up, Talking with the Taxman About Poetry and Don't Try This at Home. Kirsty MacColl sings on two, Taxman and Don't Try This at Home.

Cara Tivey's piano and organ runs across four albums from Workers Playtime, and Wiggy plays on three across the same stretch.

Don't Try This at Home holds the most surprising pair of stations on the map. Michael Stipe sings backing vocals on one track, and Peter Buck plays mandolin on another, so two-thirds of R.E.M.'s front line appear once here and nowhere else.

The Mermaid Avenue records bring Wilco's lines in whole, Jeff Tweedy, Jay Bennett, John Stirratt and Ken Coomer, with Natalie Merchant guesting. Later, Joe Henry joins for Shine a Light, and Robert Wyatt appears just once, on Mr Love & Justice.

How I make each print

Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or framed, ready to hang in a hallway, living room or studio.

Size UK USA / CAN / AUS equivalent Orientation
A2 594 x 420 mm (23 x 16 in) 24 x 18 in Landscape
A1 841 x 594 mm (33 x 23 in) 36 x 24 in Landscape

FAQ

Is the debut really just one musician?
Yes. Life's a Riot with Spy vs Spy credits Billy Bragg alone, so it appears on the map as a single line with no branches.

Which record has the most musicians?
Don't Try This at Home in 1991, with 23 credited players, ahead of Workers Playtime on 20.

Are Michael Stipe and Peter Buck really on the map?
Yes, both on Don't Try This at Home. Stipe on backing vocals, Buck on mandolin, and neither appears anywhere else in the catalogue.

Does the map include the Wilco collaborations?
Yes. The Mermaid Avenue sessions feature Jeff Tweedy, Jay Bennett, John Stirratt and Ken Coomer, and the later Shine a Light sessions feature Joe Henry.

Who is the longest-serving musician besides Bragg?
Dave Woodhead on trumpet and flugelhorn, across five records from 1984 to 1996.

What are the framing options?
Unframed, or supplied framed and ready to hang.
