About Mike Bell - V&A and Bruce Springsteen Archives Tube Map Designer
Who is Mike Bell?
I'm a UK-based designer specialising in research-led music and film data tube maps. I'm the designer, researcher and creator behind mikebellmaps.com, an expanding series of meticulously crafted tube map artworks charting the creative journeys of musicians and bands, actors and films, sport, place and politics.

From childhood I developed a fascination with liner notes, film credits and the hidden networks connecting creative collaborators. That early interest evolved into a structured design practice that transforms decades of cultural history into clear, navigable visual systems. I work from my studio in East Sussex, where I research, design and update every map myself, combining archival investigation with disciplined information design.
My background is rooted in live sound and large-scale show design, working across music and cultural events for many years. That experience shaped how I understand collaboration, creative evolution and structure - the foundations that now underpin every map I make.
Recognition from Museums, Archives and Press
The work is held in two major cultural institutions and has been the subject of national press features. Three pillars of independent recognition that I'm immensely proud of:
1. Victoria and Albert Museum, London
My David Bowie discography tube map is held in the permanent collection at the David Bowie Centre for the Study of Performing Arts, part of V&A East Storehouse at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London. The Centre is the world's most significant repository of David Bowie's archive, and my map is part of its long-term holdings. You can read the full story on the blog: The David Bowie discography tube map at the V&A David Bowie Centre.
2. Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music
The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey holds a copy of my Bruce Springsteen discography map in their permanent archive. They contacted me in November 2020 calling the map "truly amazing", and the print has been held there ever since. The Archives is the official repository of Springsteen's musical and cultural history. The full story is on the blog: My Bruce Springsteen discography map at the Bruce Springsteen Archives.
3. National Press Feature
I was recently interviewed by The Guardian for a feature about life after de-diagnosis, with the article including a link back to mikebellmaps.com. The piece is forthcoming and will be added here when published.
A Research-Led Design Methodology
Every map I make is built on verified source material and structured data.

Primary Source Verification
- Official album liner notes
- Studio session documentation
- Film credits and production archives
- Musician and producer interviews
- Specialist fan-led historical databases
Each station represents a confirmed studio album, film or defined creative milestone. Each line represents a documented collaboration or character journey. Accuracy is prioritised over speed. Maps are revised when new information emerges or when collectors contribute corrections.

Structured Visualisation of Cultural History
The tube map format isn't decorative. It's a deliberate information design framework. By applying the logic of transit cartography, complex creative careers become legible systems:
- Chronology becomes geography
- Collaboration becomes connectivity
- Evolution becomes movement
The result is a structured visual archive that allows fans, collectors and cultural researchers to see patterns that are often invisible in traditional discographies or filmographies.

Recognised by Artists and the Industry
Alongside the institutional pillars above, individual artists and industry figures have praised the work directly:
- "Truly amazing" - the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music, Monmouth University
- "Brilliant idea" - Billy Bragg
- "Very cool and smart" - Susan Rogers, producer for Prince
- "Awesome!!" - Warren Ellis of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
- "Brilliant series" - Simon Rogers of The Fall
You can also watch me discuss the background and process in conversation with Sam Knowles on the Data Malarkey podcast.
Original Editorial Writing
I write occasional long-form pieces about the research and design behind specific maps. The most recent three:
- The David Bowie discography tube map at the V&A David Bowie Centre
- My Bruce Springsteen discography map at the Bruce Springsteen Archives
- How often do bands record albums? Patterns from mapping discographies
