Nick Cave Albums in Order - A Map - Obsessive Research: Why I Made It

As the designer of these detailed tube maps charting the histories of bands, artists, films and cultural phenomena, I want to talk about a project that consumed me over several months: my Nick Cave albums music map.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds discography map showing the studio albums as stations and credited musicians as tube lines, designed by Mike Bell at mikebellmaps.com.

The map charts the studio albums and credited musicians across Nick Cave's career, from his early days with The Boys Next Door and The Birthday Party through Grinderman, The Bad Seeds, and his long collaboration with Warren Ellis.

Why Nick Cave Albums in Order?

One of the most common questions I am asked is, "Why this artist?" For Nick Cave the answer was a blend of personal interest and the sheer complexity of the musical journey. I have always admired his songwriting, his stage presence and the constant evolution of his sound. But what pulled me in was the number of collaborators who have passed through the work.

Cave's projects are famously collaborative, each one a distinct ecosystem with a rotating cast. From the raw intensity of The Birthday Party to the haunting melodies of The Bad Seeds and the noise of Grinderman, each band represented a chance to unravel an intricate network of musical relationships and draw it flat.

The Process: Working Through the Credits

Making one of my tube maps is a task for someone who relishes detail. I spent months working through liner notes, biographies and session archives, cross-checking every credit against the sleeves.

The project involved identifying obscure musicians, confirming studio collaborations and resolving ambiguous credits. I found stories buried in the footnotes of album releases and pieced together who played with whom, where and when. To say the process required patience would be an understatement.

There were days when resisting the urge to simply listen to the records rather than catalogue them became a serious challenge. Who would not rather spend an afternoon with Let Love In or Ghosteen than with a spreadsheet?

A Tribute to Collaboration

This map is not only a visualisation, it is a record of creative collaboration. It shows Cave's own line, but also the musicians whose contributions are easy to overlook and impossible to do without.

You will find Blixa Bargeld, Warren Ellis and Mick Harvey prominently placed. You will also find the less-celebrated but equally essential lines of Martyn P. Casey, Conway Savage, Barry Adamson and dozens more.

Warren Ellis himself saw the series and said "Awesome!!", which I took as permission to keep going.

Technical Challenges and Tools

Creating this tube map involved CAD and spreadsheet work and a great many revisions. The hardest part was finding a layout that represented the collaborations accurately without losing readability. Balancing precision against legibility took countless iterations.

A Personal Connection

My interest in Nick Cave sharpened at a live performance in London years ago. Standing in a packed venue, I was struck by the intensity of the band as an ensemble rather than as a frontman with a backing group. That is when I understood there was a web of collaboration behind the man, and that one day I would draw it.

Sizes and Prices

The Nick Cave Discography Tube Map Art Print is a Giclée on 230gsm textured matte fine art paper, archival and acid-free, hand-designed without AI. A3 (420 x 297 mm) is £35, unframed only. A2 (594 x 420 mm) is £45 unframed or £125 in a black wood frame. A1 (841 x 594 mm) is £65 unframed or £175 framed. Three inch formats sit alongside those as separate options, 16 x 12 in, 24 x 18 in and 36 x 24 in, priced the same way.

What Is on the Map, and What Is Not

The map plots the studio albums only. Live albums, compilations and soundtracks are left off by editorial rule, so anyone credited solely on one of those does not get a line. A producer earns a line only where they are also credited playing or singing something.

What Is Next

Making the Nick Cave map sharpened my appetite for other artists whose careers are rich with collaboration. The full range so far is in my Music Wall Art Prints collection.

Is there an artist or band you would like to see mapped? Get in touch and tell me, I am always looking for the next challenge. If you are buying for someone and are not sure which artist is theirs, there is a gift card for music fans.

Thanks for joining me on this journey through Nick Cave's recorded history.
