About R.E.M.:
R.E.M. was an American alternative rock band that formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980. The original line-up consisted of Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass), and Bill Berry (drums). Over the years, the band became one of the most influential and successful alternative rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s.
R.E.M. released their first album, "Murmur", in 1983, which was praised by critics for its jangly guitar sound and Stipe's enigmatic lyrics. The band's early music was characterized by its melancholic, introspective lyrics and its mixture of folk and punk influences. They released several critically acclaimed albums throughout the 1980s, including "Reckoning" (1984), "Fables of the Reconstruction" (1985), and "Document" (1987).
In the early 1990s, the band reached new levels of commercial success with the release of their album "Out of Time" (1991), which featured hit singles like "Losing My Religion" and "Shiny Happy People". The album sold over 18 million copies worldwide and helped to establish the band as one of the most popular and successful alternative rock bands of the decade.
R.E.M. continued to release critically acclaimed albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including "Automatic for the People" (1992), "Monster" (1994), "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" (1996), and "Accelerate" (2008). The band also continued to experiment with different sounds and influences, including country music, folk rock, and electronica.
In 2011, after over 30 years together, R.E.M. announced that they were disbanding. Throughout their career, the band was known for their socially conscious lyrics, their support of political and environmental causes, and their commitment to artistic integrity. They won multiple Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Today, R.E.M. is remembered as one of the most important and influential alternative rock bands in music history.
