It begins at Door, Door in 1979 and runs through to Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! in 2008, with exactly one break in it: Grinderman in 2007, which was recorded by a four-piece of Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos.
Blixa Bargeld of Einstürzende Neubauten enters at From Her to Eternity, and his line runs through to Nocturama (2003) before terminating. Barry Adamson's line covers the early Bad Seeds years and then returns much later, which is worth looking for on the print.
Warren Ellis enters the map at Let Love In (1994), and his line runs continuously to the present end of the map. His is now the longest-running non-Cave line in the discography, covering 30 years of studio albums.
Thomas Wydler, Martyn P. Casey, Jim Sclavunos, and Conway Savage all appear as long-running lines through the middle and later sections of the map.
The Grinderman section branches off the main network for Grinderman (2007) and Grinderman 2 (2010). Cave, Ellis, Casey, and Sclavunos recorded as a stripped-back side project before returning to the Bad Seeds configuration. Those four lines appear at both Grinderman stations before rejoining the main track.
The Guest Lines Worth Finding on the Map
Some of the most interesting details in the Nick Cave art print are the short spurs: notable guests who appear on a single album and whose lines enter and exit the map at a single station.

Murder Ballads is the most populated station on the entire map with 24 credited musicians, almost three times the count of the earliest Bad Seeds records. That density is visible at a glance when you stand back from the map.
The Good Son Brought Nine Players Who Never Came Back
This is the part of the map I enjoyed drawing most. The Good Son (1990) was recorded in Brazil, and the credits carry nine local players who appear at that one station and nowhere else across the whole 45 years.
They are Clóvis Trindade and Rubinho, the violinists Alexandre Ramirez, Altamir Téa Bueno Salinas, Helena Akiku Imasoto and Léa Kalil Sadi, the cellists Braulio Marques Lima and Cristina Manescu, and Cláudia Ferreti coordinating strings and singers.
On the print they show as a tight cluster of branch lines arriving at a single album and terminating there. It is visual evidence for something fans already feel about that record, which is that it does not sound like the albums either side of it.
Barry Adamson Leaves in 1986 and Returns 27 Years Later
Adamson arrives on Junkyard (1982) and stays through From Her to Eternity, The Firstborn Is Dead, Kicking Against the Pricks and Your Funeral... My Trial. Then his line stops dead.
Nothing for the whole of the 1990s. Nothing through Nocturama or Abattoir Blues. Nothing through either Grinderman record. Then it starts again at Push the Sky Away (2013).
A gap of that length is almost impossible to convey in a written discography. It is one of the moments where the map earns its place on a wall rather than in a book.
CARNAGE Narrows the Whole Map to Two Lines
CARNAGE (2021) carries two credited musicians. Cave and Ellis. That is the narrowest point on the map after Ghosteen, and it comes only a few stations along from No More Shall We Part with 22 names and Murder Ballads with 24.
Then it widens again. Wild God (2024) brings the count back up to eleven credited players.
Watching the print thin out to a pair of lines and then recover is the closest a static image gets to hearing a discography change shape. It is the detail most people trace first once it is pointed out to them.
Anita Lane Reaches the Final Station Three Years After She Died
Anita Lane is credited on From Her to Eternity (1984), and her line reaches the very last station on the map. On Wild God (2024) she is credited with voice on "O Wow O Wow (How Wonderful She Is)", the song Cave wrote about her. She died in 2021.
I try not to be sentimental about credit data, but that one stopped me while I was drawing it.
