A gift for Sparks fans who have followed every reinvention across 29 albums, because this runs the lot with each credited musician as their own line. They already own the records, and only two names appear on all of them.

Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Available in A2 or A1, with US sizing at 24x18in and 36x24in, unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.

The stations run chronologically from Halfnelson in 1971, through Kimono My House and No. 1 in Heaven, to Mad! in 2025. One-off contributors branch off as short spurs.

Why this Sparks discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep

Two brothers, 29 albums, and almost no continuity in between. Every few years, the supporting cast is replaced wholesale, which on a tube map produces something closer to a river delta than a railway.

One album is not staffed by musicians at all. It is staffed by actors playing Ingmar Bergman and Greta Garbo.

Contributing musicians on the map

Ron and Russell Mael are the only two lines running the full length. Everything else arrives, does one or two records, and goes.

The glam-era band is short-lived but sharp: Martin Gordon, Adrian Fisher and Norman “Dinky” Diamond on Kimono My House, with Trevor White and Ian Hampton joining for Propaganda and Indiscreet. Tony Visconti arranged the orchestra on Indiscreet in 1975.

Introducing Sparks in 1977 is a complete outlier, built with Los Angeles session players including David Paich, Mike Porcaro, Lee Ritenour, David Foster and Ed Greene. It is the widest early station on the map, and none of those lines continue.

No. 1 in Heaven in 1979 hands the record to Giorgio Moroder on synthesiser, vocoder and production, with Keith Forsey on drums. Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Go's guests on Cool Places from In Outer Space.

Plagiarism in 1997 is a station full of other bands: Faith No More, Erasure and Jimmy Somerville all perform on it, with Tony Visconti returning to conduct and the Metro Voices singing.

The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman in 2009 is unlike anything else in my catalogue. Its credits are cast roles rather than instruments, with Jonas Malmsjö as Bergman, Elin Klinga as Greta Garbo, and Katie Puckrik as a hotel operator.

Later stations include the full Franz Ferdinand line-up on FFS in 2015 and film director Leos Carax singing and playing the accordion on Annette.

How do I make each print?

Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or framed, ready to hang in a hallway, living room or studio.

Size UK USA / CAN / AUS equivalent Orientation
A2 594 x 420 mm (23 x 16 in) 24 x 18 in Landscape
A1 841 x 594 mm (33 x 23 in) 36 x 24 in Landscape
