A gift for Rolling Stones fans who assume Bill Wyman played the bass on Goats Head Soup, because this maps the album track by track and he is on three of the ten. They own the record already. The sleeve does not tell them that. This does.
Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Available in A2 or A1, with US sizing at 24x18in and 36x24in, unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.
This is the only album map I make, and it works the other way round from the rest of my catalogue. Every track on the 1973 album is a station in running order, from Dancing with Mr. D through Angie to Star Star, and every musician runs as a line through the tracks they actually played on.
Why this Goats Head Soup tube map art makes a gift fans keep
A discography map tells you who was in the room for an album. An album map tells you who was in the room for a song, which is a different and much stranger picture.
Almost nothing about a band's internal workings survives on a record sleeve. Drawn at this scale it does. It rewards every closer look.
Contributing musicians on the map
Charlie Watts is the only person on all ten tracks. Everyone else, including the other three Stones, has gaps.
The bass is where the map gets interesting. Bill Wyman plays on three tracks, Keith Richards plays bass on four, and Mick Taylor plays bass on three, which is not how anyone imagines this band works.
Mick Jagger sings lead on nine of the ten. Keith Richards takes the tenth, Coming Down Again, and Jagger turns up elsewhere on the record playing electric guitar, harmonica and piano.
Angie is the quietest station on the print. Keith Richards and Mick Taylor both on acoustic guitar, Bill Wyman on bass, Nicky Hopkins on piano and a Nicky Harrison string arrangement, with no electric guitar on it at all.
Heartbreaker is the busiest. Billy Preston on clavinet and piano, Bobby Keys on tenor saxophone, Jim Horn on alto, Chuck Findley on trumpet and a Jim Price horn arrangement, all on one track.
Three different pianists appear across the record: Nicky Hopkins on five tracks, Ian Stewart on two and Billy Preston on one. Anthony "Rebop" Kwaku Baah and Pascal add percussion to the two tracks that open and nearly close the album.
Mick Taylor's guitar runs through most of it, on what would be his penultimate album with the band before he left in 1974.
How I make each print
Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or framed, ready to hang in a hallway, living room or studio.
| Size | UK | USA / CAN / AUS equivalent | Orientation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A2 | 594 x 420 mm (23 x 16 in) | 24 x 18 in | Landscape |
| A1 | 841 x 594 mm (33 x 23 in) | 36 x 24 in | Landscape |
FAQ
How is this different from your other Rolling Stones print?
This maps one album track by track. The discography print maps the whole career album by album. This is the only map in my catalogue that shows roles at track level.
Does Bill Wyman really only play on three tracks?
Yes, on bass. Keith Richards and Mick Taylor cover the bass on six others between them, which is the sort of thing only a track level map makes obvious.
Who is on every track?
Charlie Watts. Nobody else in the band manages it.
Which track has the most musicians?
Heartbreaker, with a full horn section, a clavinet and a horn arrangement on top of the band.
Does Keith Richards sing on it?
He sings lead on Coming Down Again, the one track Jagger does not front.
What are the framing options?
Unframed, or supplied framed and ready to hang.
