A gift for Johnny Marr fans who know the Smiths years and lose the thread somewhere after them, because this follows him into every band he joined afterwards, with each credited musician running as their own line. They already own the four Smiths albums. This is forty years ago.
Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Produced unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.
I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.
The stations run chronologically from the four Smiths albums, through The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse and The Cribs, to his own solo records. One-off contributors branch off as short spurs.
Why this Johnny Marr discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep
Most discography maps follow a band. This one follows a guitarist, which produces a completely different shape: eight separate acts, each with its own cluster of lines, connected only by the one line running through all of them.
The full story on your wall, including the bands most people forget he was actually a member of rather than a guest.
Contributing musicians on the map
Morrissey, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce run beside Marr across all four Smiths albums, then stop. Nothing else on the map lasts as long in one place.
He joins The The as a full member alongside Matt Johnson for two albums, which bring in the largest single cast on the sheet, a brass and string section running to dozens of names, plus guest vocals from Neneh Cherry and Sinéad O'Connor.
Electronic is the next branch, co-writing with Bernard Sumner of New Order across three albums. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys guest on the debut, with Tennant singing lead on The Patience of a Saint, and Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk plays keyboards on Raise the Pressure.
The two 7 Worlds Collide records are the most crowded stations of all. Eddie Vedder, Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway of Radiohead, and Neil, Tim and Liam Finn all appear, with Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone of Wilco and KT Tunstall joining for the second.
Boomslang brings in Zak Starkey on drums and Alonza Bevan of Kula Shaker on bass. Modest Mouse adds Isaac Brock and the band's own line-up, with James Mercer of The Shins singing backing vocals, and The Cribs adds all three Jarman brothers.
Denise Johnson is the quiet recurring line, appearing on both Electronic albums and again on Boomslang.
How do I make each print?
Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or framed, ready to hang in a hallway, living room or studio.
