Why this Beatles discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep

A gift for Beatles fans who have long since run out of wall space for posters, this is the black-background edition of my discography map, with every credited musician drawn as a line across all 13 albums. They own the records already. This is the version that hangs as an object rather than as a piece of memorabilia.

Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Produced in A1 only, with US sizing at 36 x 24 in, unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.

Same research and same layout as the standard print, drawn light on dark. The stations run chronologically from Please Please Me in 1963 to Let It Be in 1970, with John, Paul, George and Ringo as four unbroken lines and every session player and guest connecting across the catalogue.

On black, the density ceases to be background detail and becomes the point. The crowded albums read as thickets of pale lines, and the sparse early records read as almost nothing at all.

That density is also why this edition is available only in A1. The session annotations need the larger sheet to stay legible.

Contributing musicians on the map

George Martin runs alongside the four across all 13 albums. He earns a musician line rather than a producer credit because he played piano, organ, and harmonium, with credits threaded through the catalogue.

The line most people miss belongs to the road manager. Mal Evans appears on six albums, and the credits are wonderfully specific: handclaps on Birthday, trumpet on Helter Skelter, backing vocals on Dear Prudence, and the anvil on Maxwell's Silver Hammer.

Not an algorithm - every connection on this map was made by hand, by an obsessive fan. Neil Aspinall, the other half of the road crew, has three stations of his own.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band features 21 credited musicians. Sheila Bromberg plays the harp on She's Leaving Home; Sounds Inc. brings saxophones, trombones and French horn to Good Morning Good Morning; and Within You Without You draws in Natwar Soni on tabla, Buddhadev Kansara on tambura and Amrit Gajjar on dilrubas.

Revolver widens the map to 26. Yoko Ono appears on the White Album, and Billy Preston takes stations on both Abbey Road and Let It Be.

FAQ

What is different about this edition?
The same research and layout as in the standard print, set against a black background. The information is identical; the impression is not.

Why is this edition only available in A1?
The density of the session and guest annotations requires a larger format to remain legible, so it is produced only in A1.

Is the road crew really on the map?
Yes. Mal Evans has six stations, including the anvil on Maxwell's Silver Hammer and the trumpet on Helter Skelter, and Neil Aspinall has three.

Why is George Martin on the map when producers usually are not?
Because he is credited with both playing and producing. Piano, organ and harmonium credits run through the catalogue, which is what earns a musician a line.

What are the framing options?
Unframed, or supplied framed and ready to hang.
