Ranking David Bowie's albums is genuinely difficult. His discography spans 26 studio records from the 1967 debut to Blackstar in 2016, at least six distinct musical personas, and a cast of more than 160 credited musicians. Those 26 albums are the ones drawn on my map, and the posthumous Toy, released in 2021, takes the studio count to 27 but is not on the print.
I research and design the David Bowie Discography Tube Map Art Print at mikebellmaps.com, which means I have spent more time than most people on the credits, sessions, and collaborators behind every record. These are my five, and why.
1. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972) - 6 credited musicians
This album defined glam rock and made Bowie a global star. With cinematic storytelling and songs like "Starman" and "Suffragette City," Ziggy became an icon. The perfect balance of concept, charisma, and killer hooks.
On the map, the Spiders from Mars (Mick Ronson on guitar, Trevor Bolder on bass, Mick Woodmansey on drums) run as a tight cluster through this station and the records either side of it. Rick Wakeman plays piano on It Ain't Easy. Just 6 credited musicians, but each one essential to what the record is.
2. Low (1977) - 12 credited musicians
Bold, disorienting, and entirely ahead of its time. Low, the first of the Berlin Trilogy, split into fragmented art-pop and ambient soundscapes, was crafted with Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti. It changed electronic and post-punk music permanently.
The musician count rises to 12 at this station, reflecting the expanded cast Bowie assembled for the Berlin sessions. Carlos Alomar, George Murray, and Dennis Davis carry across from the previous records. Ricky Gardiner plays guitar on What in the World and Speed of Life, Roy Bittan of the E Street Band plays piano, and the combination of those lines produces something that sounds like no other record in the discography.
Low is also where Brian Eno's line enters the map. He is credited on 4 albums in all, running from Low in 1977 through to Outside in 1995.
3. Hunky Dory (1971) - 5 credited musicians
A record of sheer songwriting brilliance. From "Life on Mars?" to "Changes" to "Queen Bitch," Bowie blends surrealism with reflection. Intimate yet theatrical, it is the sound of an artist finding his voice and future in one stroke.
Only 5 credited musicians. Rick Wakeman's piano is the most recognisable new line entering the map at this station; his playing on Life on Mars? is one of the best known piano parts in British rock. Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder, and Mick Woodmansey form the same tight cluster that carries through to Ziggy. The map's sparseness at this station matches the intimacy of the record.
4. Heroes (1977) - 9 credited musicians
The title track alone earns it a place. Heroes is Bowie at his most romantic and resilient. Add in the dark grooves of Joe the Lion and Sons of the Silent Age, and you have a Cold War masterpiece.
Robert Fripp of King Crimson enters the map at this station on guitar, his line one of the shortest and sharpest spurs in the mid-period discography. He appears here and at Scary Monsters (1980) before his line ends, 2 albums in total. Carlos Alomar, George Murray, and Dennis Davis all return, and each of the 9 musicians contributes something you can hear clearly in the record.
5. Blackstar (2016) - 9 credited musicians
Released two days before his death, Blackstar is haunting, fearless, and experimental. Jazz fusion, cryptic lyrics, and something that sounds like a deliberate farewell. It is a reminder that Bowie never stopped evolving, even at the very end.
The Donny McCaslin quartet defines this album's sound: McCaslin on saxophone, Ben Monder on guitar, Jason Lindner on keyboards, Tim Lefebvre on bass, and Mark Guiliana on drums. These are five new lines entering the map at its final station, musicians Bowie sought out specifically after hearing McCaslin's group live. 9 credited musicians at the last station, the same number as Heroes, the same quiet precision at the close that the map had at its 1977 peak.
