A gift for OMD fans who could not tell you which of the albums are actually a duo, because this maps all fourteen and three of them turn out to be one man. They own the records already. Andy McCluskey's line runs the full width, and Paul Humphreys' does not.
Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Available in A2 or A1, with US sizing at 24x18in and 36x24in, unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.
I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.
The stations run chronologically from the 1980 debut to Bauhaus Staircase in 2023.
Why this OMD discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep
The gap in the middle of this map is the whole point. Three albums in the 1990s carry a single core credit, and one of them credits no guests at all.
Then the lines come back. It rewards every closer look.
Contributing musicians on the map
Andy McCluskey is credited on all fourteen albums. Paul Humphreys is on eleven, with his line breaking across Sugar Tax, Liberator and Universal and rejoining at History of Modern in 2010.
Malcolm Holmes and Martin Cooper follow the same shape. Both join at the start, hold the middle of the catalogue, drop out for the 1990s and return for the two albums from 2010 onwards.
Martin Cooper's credit changes as the map goes on. He starts as a saxophone player on the debut and ends up on keyboards, which is a small thing that only shows up when you follow one line the whole way.
Junk Culture brings in a Dutch brass section for two tracks, with the arrangements written by Tony Visconti. The same album credits Maureen Humphreys with the vocals on Tesla Girls.
Crush and The Pacific Age add Stephen Hague on keyboards and guitar, along with Graham Weir on trombone and Neil Weir on trumpet, which is when the map is at its widest.
