Why this Nirvana discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep
A discography gift for Nirvana fans who know all three albums by heart and have run out of things left to find in them, because this draws every credited musician across the whole run as their own line. They own the records already. This is the part the records never showed them: how few people it actually took.
I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.
Three stations, Bleach in 1989, Nevermind in 1991 and In Utero in 1993, and a set of lines that carry on past the last one.
Four musicians are credited on Bleach. Six are credited on In Utero. That is the entire span of a band that changed the decade, and seeing it at that scale is the point of the print.
Not an algorithm - every connection on this map was made by hand, by an obsessive fan. I worked from the sleeve credits, which is why the odd spellings and the uncredited appearances are on there too.
Contributing musicians on the map
Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic run across all three albums. Cobain is credited on Bleach as Kurdt Kobain, and Novoselic on the first two as Chris Novoselic, which is how the sleeves have it.
Chad Channing drums on Bleach, and Dale Crover plays drums on three of its tracks. Dave Grohl arrives at Nevermind, but Channing has one more appearance after that: uncredited cymbals on Polly.
The rest of the map is strings and one guitar. Kurt Cobain and Canning play cello on Something in the Way, Kera Schaley on All Apologies and Dumb, and Lori Goldston on the live tracks. Pat Smear joins for the In Utero era.
Grohl and Smear are the two lines that do not stop at 1993. Both run on into the Foo Fighters catalogue, which is mapped in full on its own print.

Who drummed on each album?
Chad Channing on Bleach, with Dale Crover on three tracks, then Dave Grohl from Nevermind onwards.
Does Chad Channing appear after Bleach?
Yes, on uncredited cymbals on Polly, which is why his line reaches Nevermind on the map.
Why are some names spelled oddly?
Because I follow the sleeve credits. Cobain is Kurdt Kobain on Bleach and Novoselic is Chris Novoselic on the first two albums.
