Why this Brighton and Hove Albion FC tube map art makes a gift Seagulls fans keep
A gift for Brighton and Hove Albion FC fans who are tired of another crest on another mug, because this draws the whole club as a network, and Brian Clough is on it. They know the story already. Almost nothing you can hang on a wall actually tells it.
Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Produced unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.
This one is club history research rather than a badge on a background. Six separate lines run across it, for the managers, the grounds, the owners and chairmen, the Football League, the FA Cup, the Charity Shield, and the Europa League.
Every club map I have seen picks one thing. This one runs six at once, so you can follow a manager, a ground and a league position across the same stretch of years and see how they line up.
Living down the road from the Amex, I made one of the more personal maps I have. The full story on your wall.
What the map shows
The stadium line is the spine. It starts at the Cricket Ground in 1901, moves to the Goldstone in 1902, marks the ground's sale in 1995, then moves to Priestfield in Gillingham, back to Withdean from 1999, and finally to Falmer in 2011.
The manager line is by far the busiest, and it is the one that makes the print worth standing in front of. It runs from John Jackson and John Robson through Charlie Webb, Billy Lane and Alan Mullery, and it carries both Brian Clough and Peter Taylor in the 1970s.
It keeps going through Liam Brady, Jimmy Case, Micky Adams, Steve Coppell, Gus Poyet, Sami Hyypiä, Oscar Garcia and Chris Hughton, and on to Graham Potter, Roberto De Zerbi and Fabian Hürzeler.
The owner-and-chairman line runs alongside it, taking in the Greyhound track finance years, Dick Knight, and Tony Bloom from 2009.
The league line carries the awkward years properly. The 1983 FA Cup Final and the replay defeat are on it, and so is 1997, marked as the lowest tier and the required draw at Hereford.
At the other end, it runs through promotion to the Premier League in 2017, the FA Cup semi-finals in 2019 and 2023, sixth place in 2022-23, and a Europa League run that ends in the last sixteen against Roma.
The record panel is worth a look on its own. A 10-1 FA Cup win over Wisbech Town in November 1965, a 22-game unbeaten run in 2015, and a 0-18 wartime defeat to Norwich City on Christmas Day 1940.
