The band's most famous record, Kimono My House in 1974, was made by a line-up that barely existed on either side of it. Martin Gordon's bass line calls at that one station and nowhere else on the map.
Adrian Fisher's guitar stretches only as far as Propaganda later the same year, and drummer Norman "Dinky" Diamond, credited on Kimono My House with drums, percussion and castanets, lasts three albums to Indiscreet. A short branch line carrying that much weight is exactly the kind of detail that makes a fan lean in to the print.
Introducing Sparks Hired Half of Los Angeles, Once
Introducing Sparks in 1977 is the most crowded single station on the map. The Mael brothers recorded it with sixteen Los Angeles session players, including David Foster, David Paich, Lee Ritenour and Mike Porcaro.
Not one of those sixteen lines appears on any other Sparks album. On the print, it reads as a burst of branch lines arriving at one station, terminating, and never being seen again.
Giorgio Moroder Is on the Map for Playing, Not Producing
My rule on every map is that producers only get a line if they are also credited with playing something. Giorgio Moroder qualifies for No. 1 in Heaven in 1979, where he is credited with synthesiser and vocoder alongside his production.
Keith Forsey, his drummer, carries on to Terminal Jive in 1980, where Harold Faltermeyer appears on keyboards. That corner of the print is a little diagram of the Munich disco machine passing through Sparks.
Tony Visconti Left in 1975 and Came Back 22 Years Later
Tony Visconti, best known for producing David Bowie, wrote the orchestral arrangements on Indiscreet in 1975. His line then stops dead for twenty-two years.
It reappears on Plagiarism in 1997, where he arranged and conducted orchestral versions of songs including "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us" and "The Number One Song in Heaven". Gaps like that are the reason I draw these maps: you can watch a working relationship pause and resume across two eras of the band.
