A gift for Squeeze fans who could not say when Jools Holland left, let alone that he came back, because this runs 17 albums with every credited musician as their own line. They already own the records, and two members of Spinal Tap are on one of them.
Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Available in A2 or A1, with US sizing at 24x18in and 36x24in, unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex..
I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.
The stations run chronologically from the 1978 debut, through Cool for Cats, Argybargy and East Side Story, to The Knowledge and beyond.
Why this Squeeze discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep
Two songwriters run the full length, and the band around them empties and refills repeatedly. One album features thirteen musicians. Another has two.
Not an algorithm - every connection on this map was made by hand, by an obsessive fan. The gaps are as informative as the crowds.
Contributing musicians on the map
Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook are credited on all 17 albums. Nothing else on the map comes close.
Jools Holland's line is not the simple exit most fans remember. He plays on the first three albums, disappears for three, then returns for Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti, Babylon and On and Frank before leaving for good.
Gilson Lavis drums across nine albums, and Keith Wilkinson holds the bass line through the whole middle of the catalogue.
Paul Carrack has three stations spread across nearly thirty years: East Side Story, where he sings lead on Tempted, then Some Fantastic Place, and Spot the Difference.
Elvis Costello also appears twice, adding vocals to Tempted on East Side Story, then returning to sing backing vocals on Black Coffee In Bed from Sweets from a Stranger, where Paul Young sings on the same track.
Play in 1991 carries the strangest credits on the map. Christopher Guest and Michael McKean, two-thirds of Spinal Tap, both appear, alongside Michael Penn.
Some Fantastic Place brings in Bruce Hornsby on accordion, with Steve Nieve and Pete Thomas of the Attractions. Domino in 1998 is the emptiest station on the whole print, credited to Difford and Tilbrook alone, and Cradle to the Grave is the fullest with thirteen musicians, including Glenn Tilbrook's sons Louis and Leon on backing vocals.
How do I make each print?
Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or framed, ready to hang in a hallway, living room or studio.
