A gift for Simple Minds fans who have never noticed the jazz legend on New Gold Dream, because it runs through 21 albums, with every credited musician on their own line. They already own the records, and Herbie Hancock is playing on one of them.
Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Available in A2 or A1, with US sizing at 24x18in and 36x24in, unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.
I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.
The stations run chronologically from Life in a Day in 1979, through New Gold Dream and Once Upon a Time, to Direction of the Heart in 2022.

Two lines run the whole 43 years, and the band around them turns over completely, twice. The early art-rock line-up leaves, the stadium line-up leaves, and the two founders keep going.
The guests are the surprise: jazz, the Velvet Underground and a set of bagpipes all appear. It rewards every closer look.
Contributing musicians on the map
Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill are credited on all 21 albums. Nothing else on the map comes close.
Derek Forbes plays bass on the first seven, then leaves; Brian McGee drums on the first five; and Mick MacNeil's keyboards run to Real Life in 1991. Mel Gaynor takes the drum chair from New Gold Dream and holds it, on and off, for decades.
New Gold Dream in 1982 is where the map gets interesting. Three different drummers appear on it, and Herbie Hancock is a guest on keyboards on one track.
Kirsty MacColl sings on two tracks of Sparkle in the Rain in 1984, and Street Fighting Years in 1989 is the widest station of the classic era, with Lou Reed taking an additional lead vocal, Manu Katché on drums, Lisa Germano on violin, Stewart Copeland of The Police on uncredited LinnDrum, and Roger Sharp on bagpipes.
Later stations keep pulling in outsiders. Bono sings on Our Secrets Are the Same, KT Tunstall appears on the acoustic record, The Anchoress sings on Walk Between Worlds, and Russell Mael of Sparks takes a vocal on Direction of the Heart.
