The stations run chronologically from The Smiths in 1984, through Viva Hate and Vauxhall and I, to the most recent records. One-off contributors branch off as short spurs.

Most fans know the early half. Very few could name who is on the last three records, and that is where the map earns its keep.

Contributing musicians on the map

Morrissey is the only line running the full length. Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce run beside him across all four Smiths albums and stop together in 1987.

Boz Boorer is the longest line of the solo years by a distance, joining at Your Arsenal in 1992 and still present thirty years later on Bonfire of Teenagers. Alain Whyte arrives with him, leaves after Years of Refusal, and returns for the most recent album.

Viva Hate opens the solo half with Vini Reilly of The Durutti Column on guitar and Stephen Street on bass, alongside a small string section. Mark E. Nevin of Fairground Attraction takes the guitar chair for Kill Uncle.

Ennio Morricone arranged the strings on Dear God Please Help Me, from Ringleader of the Tormentors in 2006. It is one of the least likely single stations anywhere in my catalogue.

Jesse Tobias picks up guitar from that album onward, with Gustavo Manzur and Matt Walker carrying much of the later sound. Chrissie Hynde and Jeff Beck both appear once on Years of Refusal.

The last three records are the surprise. California Son brings in Billie Joe Armstrong, Petra Haden, Ed Droste and, credited for dog barking, Little Willie Iniesta. I Am Not a Dog on a Chain adds Thelma Houston, Greg Leisz, and two people credited simply as "laughing."

Bonfire of Teenagers is the busiest guest station of all: Flea, Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, plus Iggy Pop and Miley Cyrus.
