A gift for Lloyd Cole fans who think the Commotions stopped in 1989, because this maps all seventeen albums and two of that band keep reappearing for another twenty years. They own the records already. The break-up is not where the map says it is.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.
The stations run chronologically from Rattlesnakes in 1984 to On Pain in 2023, covering the three Commotions albums and the whole solo run.

The usual story has a band, then a break, then a solo career. The map shows something less tidy, with two Commotions lines carrying on quietly across nine albums each.
Not an algorithm - every connection on this map was made by hand, by an obsessive fan. Following the sleeve credits is the only way that pattern shows up at all.
Contributing musicians on the map
Lloyd Cole is credited on all seventeen albums. Neil Clark on guitar and Blair Cowan on keyboards are next, with nine stations each, spread well past the end of the Commotions.
Lawrence Donegan and Stephen Irvine hold the other two Commotions lines across Rattlesnakes, Easy Pieces and Mainstream. Anne Dudley writes the string arrangements on that first run, and Tracey Thorn and Gary Barnacle appear in the same period.
The solo records move the map to New York. Fred Maher and Robert Quine both take long runs, and Matthew Sweet, Leland Sklar, Carlos Vega, Anton Fier and Bashiri Johnson all join across the 1990s.
Jon Hassell brings his trumpet to Don't Get Weird on Me Babe, a record built round a string orchestra rather than a band. Later stations pick up Joan As Police Woman, Jill Sobule and Hans-Joachim Roedelius of Cluster.
Will Cole appears on guitar and harmony vocals on the recent albums, which is the second family name on the map.
