A gift for Jethro Tull fans who could not name the man who played guitar on nineteen of these albums, because this maps all twenty-three and draws every credited musician as their own line. They own the records already. Ian Anderson is on all of them, and Martin Barre is very nearly.
Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Produced unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.
I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.
The stations run chronologically from This Was in 1968 to RökFlöte in 2023.
Why this Jethro Tull discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep
Fifty-five years sit on this print, and the shape of it is one very long line beside a slightly shorter one, with everything else arriving and leaving around them.
Following a single line the whole way across is where the detail is. The full story on your wall.
Contributing musicians on the map
Ian Anderson is credited on all twenty-three albums. Martin Barre joined Stand Up in 1969 and held the guitar chair for the next three decades, which makes him the second-longest-serving member by a very wide margin.
Mick Abrahams plays on the debut, and nowhere else, so his is one of the shortest lines on the print despite being a founder. Glenn Cornick holds the bass for the first three albums, and Clive Bunker the drums for the first four.
John Evan brings piano, organ and harpsichord across the 1970s run, the period where the map is at its densest.
The orchestral arrangements line is the one worth following closely. It runs across a large part of the catalogue under two different names, credited as David Palmer on the original sleeves and as Dee Palmer since, which is exactly how the credits read.
Anderson's own credit keeps changing too. It starts with flute, mouth organ and claghorn, and by the last album it reads concert flutes, alto flutes, flute d'amour and Irish whistle.
How do I make each print?
Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or framed, ready to hang in a hallway, living room or studio.
| Size | UK | USA / CAN / AUS equivalent | Orientation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A2 | 594 x 420 mm (23 x 16 in) | 24 x 18 in | Landscape |
| A1 | 841 x 594 mm (33 x 23 in) | 36 x 24 in | Landscape |
FAQ
How many albums are on the map?
Twenty-three, from This Was in 1968 to RökFlöte in 2023.
Who is on every album?
Ian Anderson, and only Ian Anderson.
How long is Martin Barre in the band?
From the second album onwards, across nineteen of the twenty-three, which is the longest run of anyone else.
What happened to the original guitarist?
Mick Abrahams plays on the debut only, so his line stops at the first station.
Why does one name appear two ways?
Because the sleeves do. The orchestral arranger is credited as David Palmer on the earlier albums and as Dee Palmer on the later ones, and I follow the credits.
What are the framing options?
Unframed, or supplied framed and ready to hang.
