A discography gift for Muse fans who have never quite worked out how three people make that much noise, because this maps ten albums and shows exactly where they stopped doing it alone. They own the records already. The debut credits three musicians, and the later stations carry whole orchestras and choirs.

Some of those jobs are worth reading twice. It rewards every closer look.

Contributing musicians on the map

Matt Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard are credited on all ten albums, with no line-up change in the band's history. Wolstenholme also takes lead vocals on two tracks of The 2nd Law, which is the only break in that pattern.

Showbiz in 1999 credits nobody else at all. Origin of Symmetry brings in the first four outside players, a string quartet including Caroline Lavelle on cello.

Absolution adds Audrey Riley on string arrangements and a set of vocal samples on Stockholm Syndrome and Endlessly. Black Holes and Revelations brings in Edoardo de Angelis on first violin, Marco Brioschi on trumpet, and a credit for antique items crushed on Exo-Politics.

The Resistance carries the Edodea Ensemble, with Audrey Riley and Enrico Gabrielli on bass clarinet, and three people credited with handclaps and football hooligan noises on Uprising.

Drones is the strangest station on the print. Alongside David Campbell conducting a full orchestra and choir, the credits include an actor as a drill sergeant, another as a recruit, and John F. Kennedy, through a recording of his 1961 speech on secret societies.

Simulation Theory brings in Mike Elizondo, Shellback and Tove Lo. Will of the People credits the band's own children for the crowd vocals of the title track, and The Wow! Signal adds the Crouch End Festival Chorus, the London Metropolitan Orchestra and Ellie Goulding.
