Why this Mumford and Sons discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep
A discography gift for Mumford and Sons fans who have spent fifteen years being told this is just a banjo band, because this maps eight albums and shows the banjo line stopping halfway across. They own the records already. The map makes an argument that the records cannot make on their own.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.
The stations run chronologically from Sigh No More in 2009 to Rushmere in 2025 and include the records the band made under other names.
Two stations on this map are not Mumford and Sons albums at all. Laura Marling's I Speak Because I Can is on there because three of them play on it, and Marcus Mumford's solo record is on there because it is the same line continuing.
It rewards every closer look, particularly around 2015, where one line ends and the map changes shape.
Contributing musicians on the map
Marcus Mumford is the only line that calls at every station. Ben Lovett and Ted Dwane run everything except the solo album.
Winston Marshall's banjo line is the one that stops. He plays on the first three Mumford and Sons records and on the Laura Marling album, and after Wilder Mind, he is gone from the map entirely.
The Marling station is a surprise for most people. Marcus Mumford drums on it, Winston Marshall plays banjo, and Ted Dwane plays double bass, so the band appears on her record as a backing group.
Babel carries the best guest credit in the catalogue. Paul Simon plays electric guitar and sings backing vocals on a version of The Boxer, with Jerry Douglas on Dobro.
Wilder Mind brings in James Ford, Thomas Bartlett and Aaron Dessner of The National, and Dessner returns on Rushmere a decade later. The Johannesburg EP adds Baaba Maal, The Very Best and Beatenberg as featured artists.
The solo album in 2022 is the densest station of all, with twenty credited musicians. Phoebe Bridgers, Brandi Carlile, Clairo, Monica Martin and Danielle Ponder sing on it, and the players include Blake Mills, Jim Keltner, Pino Palladino and Steve Ferrone.
