Why this Blade Runner plot map art makes a gift fans keep
A gift for Blade Runner fans who love the film and have never quite been able to follow the plot, because this draws every character as a line and every scene as a station. They have the poster already. This is the one thing the film itself refuses to make clear.
Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Produced unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.
I mapped Ridley Scott's 1982 film so that the beats of its Los Angeles become stations, in the style of a classic London Underground map. Deckard is the constant line, and the replicants cross it one by one.
I plot a film by watching it stop-start, scene by scene, writing down the action. With this one, that method matters more than usual, because the film is built to be atmospheric rather than legible.
Drawn out flat, the structure is much tighter than it feels while you are watching it. It rewards every closer look.
Characters and key plot points on the map
Rick Deckard runs from the noodle bar arrest to the final rooftop, and his is the only line that touches almost every other one. Roy Batty's runs in the opposite direction, hunting for more life rather than for people.
Rachael, Pris, Leon and Zhora each have their own line, and each one ends where Deckard's crosses it. Eldon Tyrell and J.F. Sebastian sit at the two ends of the same short branch, which is the neatest bit of structure in the whole film.
Gaff threads quietly through the entire map as an observer rather than a participant, marked by the origami he leaves behind. His last station is the one that has kept people arguing for forty years.
Named stations include the Voight-Kampff test at the Tyrell pyramid, the market where the snake scale is identified, Taffey Lewis's bar, the Bradbury Building and the rooftop. Leon's line, "Quite an experience to live in fear, isn't it?", sits on the map as a station marker.
How do I make each print?
Each one is a Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper with a textured matte finish, archival and acid-free, so the colours hold for years. Choose A2 or A1, unframed or framed, ready to hang in a hallway, living room or studio.
| Size | UK | USA / CAN / AUS equivalent | Orientation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A2 | 594 x 420 mm (23 x 16 in) | 24 x 18 in | Landscape |
| A1 | 841 x 594 mm (33 x 23 in) | 36 x 24 in | Landscape |
FAQ
Which characters are on the map?
Deckard, Roy Batty, Rachael, Gaff, Pris, Leon, Zhora, J.F. Sebastian and Eldon Tyrell, each as a distinct line.
How do you plot a film?
By watching it on stop and start, scene by scene, and writing down the action and the dialogue as they happen.
Is this the theatrical cut or the Final Cut?
The map follows the beats common to the film's major versions, so it holds up whichever one you know.
Does it include Blade Runner 2049?
No. This one charts the 1982 film.
What is Gaff's line for?
He is on screen far less than the others, but touches the story at almost every stage, which is much easier to see drawn out than it is while watching.
What are the framing options?
Unframed, or supplied framed and ready to hang.
