If you want a gift for Foo Fighters fans that isn't another band photo in a frame, this is the one I make: a discography map that treats all 16 albums as stations and each credited musician as their own named tube line.
I researched and designed it myself in East Sussex, working through the credits album by album rather than the hits. The result is a print that rewards being read from a foot away, which is exactly what a proper fan does with it.
Nate Mendel Has Not Missed a Record Since 1997
Dave Grohl is the obvious long line, running from his drum credit on Nevermind through 15 of the 16 stations. The one I find more interesting to point at is Nate Mendel.
Mendel's bass line joins at The Colour and the Shape in 1997 and calls at every single Foo Fighters station after it, twelve records in all, right through to Your Favorite Toy in 2026. That is 29 years without a gap.
On the map, it reads as one unbroken stripe crossing the whole width of the print while almost everything else around it stops, restarts or branches away. If you are buying for someone who has followed the band since the nineties, that is the detail they will find first.
Four Drummers Sit on This Map, and One Line Simply Stops
The drum stool is the most eventful part of the whole design. Grohl plays everything on the 1995 debut, including the drums. William Goldsmith appears once, credited on "Doll" and for the slow intro to "Up in Arms" on The Colour and the Shape, and then his line ends.
Taylor Hawkins is credited on ten of the albums here, from 1999 onward, and his line grows as it goes. He is not just drums: percussion, backing vocals, piano on "Summer's End", lead vocals and rhythm guitar on "Cold Day in the Sun", lead vocals again on track 9 of Concrete and Gold.
Then the line stops at Hail Satin in July 2021. But Here We Are in 2023 is the first album on the map with no Hawkins credit since 1997, and no drummer line reaches it at all. Ilan Rubin's line begins fresh at Your Favorite Toy in 2026, the band's twelfth studio album and his first with them. Plotting that gap was the hardest hour of the whole build.
Pat Smear Leaves, Comes Back for One Track, Then Stays
Pat Smear is credited on nine Foo Fighters studio albums, but not nine in a row, and the shape of that is one of the better stories in the print.
He plays guitar on The Colour and the Shape in 1997, then his line drops away entirely for three albums. It reappears in 2007 for a single credit, rhythm guitar on "Let It Die" from Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace, and from Wasting Light in 2011, he is on every station to 2026.
Drawn out as a tube line, a return like that is instantly legible in a way a paragraph of text never is. You see the ten-year absence as literal empty space.
Concrete and Gold Is Where a Beatle Turns Up on Drums
Nineteen musicians are credited on Concrete and Gold in 2017, and the guest bench is the strangest of any album on the map. These are the names that branch off it.

Rami Jaffee Arrived as a Guest and Is Still There in 2026
Rami Jaffee first appears on In Your Honor in 2005 as a guest keyboard player on six tracks. He is on the map continuously after that, with nine records to Your Favorite Toy in 2026, where he is credited with piano, keyboards and theremin on "Spit Shine".
That is a guest line quietly turning into a spine, and it is the sort of thing you only notice when the whole discography is laid out at once. In Your Honor also brought in John Paul Jones on piano and mandolin, Norah Jones on "Virginia Moon", Josh Homme on rhythm guitar for "Razor" and Brian May, the album before that, on "Tired of You" from One by One.
Why This Gift for Foo Fighters Fans Reads Better Than a Poster
A poster gives you one image. This gives a fan something to argue with, because every line on it comes from a credit I checked rather than a general impression of who was in the band.
My rule is that a producer only gets a line if they are also credited with playing something. That is why Butch Vig appears for percussion on "Back and Forth" from Wasting Light, and Nick Raskulinecz appears for double bass on "On the Mend". Tony Visconti is on there for the string arrangement on "I Am a River". Producers who only produce are not lines, however famous.
For a casual fan, A2 in a black wood frame sits comfortably above a desk. For someone who owns the records, go to A1, because the branch lines and one-off credits are where the reading time is.
