Contributing musicians on the map
Joe Jackson is credited on all twenty-one albums. Graham Maby is on fifteen of them, playing bass from the 1979 debut to the recent records, which is one of the longest sideman lines anywhere in my catalogue.
Gary Burke on drums and Sue Hadjopoulos on percussion each take eight stations, so the map has a genuine core underneath all the genre swerves.
The early band is short-lived. Gary Sanford plays guitar on the first four albums, and David Houghton plays drums on five, and then both lines stop.
Ed Roynesdal is the line to follow for the 1980s. He arrives on violin and ends up credited for synthesiser, vibraphone, Hammond organ and sampling across five records.
The Duke, the 2012 Ellington album, brings in Ahmir Questlove Thompson on drums for six of its tracks. Jumpin' Jive pulls in a whole horn section, and Symphony No. 1 credits Jackson himself for the voices of Cynicism and Greed.
