Why this Hank Marvin discography tube map art makes a gift fans keep

A discography gift for Hank Marvin fans who could not say how many albums he has made outside the Shadows, because this maps all thirty-six, and fifteen of them are his own. They own the records already. This is the only line that reaches both ends.

Giclée on 230gsm premium fine art paper, textured matte, archival and acid-free. Produced unframed or framed. Deeply researched and designed by me in East Sussex.

I plot these in CAD software. Every credited musician becomes a transit line, every album becomes a station, and anyone who appears only once gets a branch line of their own.

The stations run chronologically from The Shadows in 1961 to Without a Word in 2017, with the Shadows albums and the solo records interleaved in release order rather than separated.

Fifty-six years on one sheet, and the two careers turn out not to be two careers at all. They run alongside each other from 1969 onwards, alternating.

The shape changes as well. The early stations are bands of four or five, and the later solo ones are one man plus whoever he invites. The full story on your wall.

Contributing musicians on the map

Hank Marvin is credited on all thirty-six albums. Brian Bennett is next, holding the drum chair from the second album for more than twenty stations, and Bruce Welch runs the rhythm guitar line across the Shadows records.

The original rhythm section barely appears. Tony Meehan plays on the first album only, and Jet Harris on the first two, which makes theirs two of the shortest lines on a print covering five decades.

Brian "Licorice" Locking and then John Rostill took the bass through the 1960s, with Rostill recording six albums.

The solo records completely change the map's shape. From 1990 onwards, the stations carry a single core credit and a rotating set of guests, so the right-hand side of the print looks nothing like the left.

Marvin's own credit shifts along the way too, from lead guitar, piano and vocals on the first album, through mandolin, to simply lead guitar on the later Shadows records.
