I mapped the film so that a summer at Kellerman's becomes a transit network, in the style of a classic London Underground map. Baby is the constant line, and the guests and the staff run as two separate groups that are not supposed to meet.
I plot a film by watching it in stop-start, scene-by-scene, writing down the action and the lines as they happen. Doing that with this one makes something obvious that the soundtrack tends to hide.
It is a film about class, drawn as two sets of lines that keep crossing where they should not. The full story on your wall.
Characters and key plot points on the map
Frances "Baby" Houseman, played by Jennifer Grey, runs as the constant line and is the only character who moves freely between the guest side of the map and the staff side.
Johnny Castle's line, played by Patrick Swayze, stays on the staff side until Baby pulls it across. Penny Johnson's line is the one that sets the whole plot moving, and Jake Houseman's crosses it at the point that changes everything.
Lisa Houseman, Marjorie Houseman, Neil Kellerman, Max Kellerman and Robbie Gould fill out the guest side, and the map keeps them visibly apart from the staff quarters.
Named stations include the arrival at Kellerman's, the staff quarters dance, carrying the watermelon, the lift practice in the lake, the Sheldrake booking and the final performance.
