Film Plot Maps: Seeing Cinema on the (Subway) Line

When I first tried mapping a film plot, just to see whether it could be done, I half-expected the result to be a mess of tangled arcs and loose ends. Somehow it was not. The characters lined up like stations, scenes flowed like services, and the big twists became junctions that forced my imaginary passengers to change trains. That early experiment, far too rough to hang on a wall, is where the collection you are browsing today started.

The Shining film plot lines map art print mapping the psychological unravelling through the movie's timeline, designed by Mike Bell at mikebellmaps.com.

What Is a Film Plot Map?

Think of the London Underground diagram. Now swap the Circle line for Chief Brody's shark-shadowed journey, or the Victoria line for Marty McFly's hop through 1955. Each coloured line is a main character or a narrative thread. Each station marks a scene or a turning point. Taken together, the network shows how the strands of a story weave, diverge and sometimes collide in a finale that still makes your heart skip.

Titles on the Wall

I have grouped the prints into loose genres so you can go straight to what you love:

That list will grow. I am always scribbling notes during late-night rewatches, so if your favourite is not here yet, there is a fair chance it is in the sketchbook.

Why Bother Mapping at All?

Because films are dense. Blink and you miss a clue, or a small choice that changes everything. On a map the whole route stays visible. You can trace parallel arcs, Deckard's slow awakening running against Roy Batty's countdown, or see how Spielberg paces every false alarm in Jaws. Plotting one always turns up beats I had forgotten were in the film at all. It is a nerdy pleasure, and it also happens to be a tidy tool for writers, teachers and anyone curious about how a story is built.
